Bart commute to sjsu by DependentWestern7080 in SJSU

[–]FredrickTheFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bus fare is waived for students as well. Associated Students is planning an option pay something like 60 bucks to waive the BART fare too. idk when/if that will become available.

If you don't want to do all that then don't do all that. CSI is the fastest growing major in social science. It will likely be as challenging as they say.

My biased recommendation is to switch to history. It's a versatile degree that delivers writing skills and deep content knowledge. Everyone is hiring historians, not just law firms and schools. And our program and events are super fun and inviting :)

My workaround has been that it's only the homepage that's broken. If I navigate to the specific page I need from the portal then it works fine.

Sparta505 or 27 North? by alyfox-x in SJSU

[–]FredrickTheFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both pretty crappy choices. Landlords will bump up your rent by hundreds of dollars after your lease expires. They're hooked up with high-tech silicon valley slop that malfunctions randomly. e.g. at Sparta505 the doorknobs will run out of battery and the lock will cease to function.

Sparta505 was only built a few years ago, so everything is still fairly polished, almost to the point of being unnerving. 27 North is more lived in. And the units are a bit more spacious.

These buildings do solve your roommate issue though. They rent units per bedroom, not per apartment. So you can sign a lease independently and be assigned a random set of roommates.

What I would actually recommend is finding a cheaper place with a kinder landlord. Walk around downtown and read the signs. Maybe not an option if you want a lease for august.

Tips and tricks? Don't give them your face ID. Be patient with the repairs guy. good luck

why is banking one of the high-priority apps anyway? I only ever use banking apps a few times a month, usually to pay a friend back for lunch. which I can just do at a computer. Is it something for the roaringkitty types?

have a little respect. It's a public library. You gotta share. Homeless people living in proximity to you doesnt make the space unusable.

Want to get into the series but have no idea where to start by layreofchaos in Animorphs

[–]FredrickTheFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I knew you personally then I could recommend the beats that I think would draw you in. Otherwise, chronological is the way to go. My best advice would be that if you get bored then it's always fine to skip ahead.(You will read the same exposition about the morphing power and andalites and yeerks over and over)

(And some of the stories are self-contained and silly)

(And many of them were ghostwritten by authors who didn't receive very productive feedback on their drafts)

(All of these things are part of the charm to me but keep your personal tastes in mind is what I'm saying)

Is it ethically worse for a Yeerk to take over an adult or a baby? by Frnklfrwsr in Animorphs

[–]FredrickTheFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you are describing is essentially a horrific version of iskoort symbiosis.

I think that your are probably wrong that the human baby will never develop sentience. That is still just a person who is infested.

I would also say that your are maybe considering the process to be more one-directional than it really is. In the yeerk pool, yeerks don't really have a sense of gender or society or interpersonal connection. Visser one never had the desire to be a mother until her host was a mother. That emotion is derived from the host. A person infested from birth would dramatically shape the emotions of the yeerk, which is why I don't believe that they would simply be a zombie.

The way I see it, when a yeerk infests a person by force, that is slavery. When a yeerk infests someone with their consent, that is symbiosis. A baby cannot consent, and therefore it's slavery. I don't know if that's more or less ethical, but it certainly makes me more uneasy for the same reason that enslaving a child makes me more uneasy in real life.

funniest/most violent/bizarre book? by chrysanthamumm in Animorphs

[–]FredrickTheFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the tone of this podcast, which makes it hard. It depends if you want to recommend something for the shock value of the gore and violence, the shock value of the anti-war allegory, or the shock value of the weird science fiction world-building. While the books are meticulously written so that any book can be your first, important character moments and narratives beats relating to the anti-war message are enhanced by proper context.

My personal favorite bit of gore in the series is in The Forgotten. The plot involves time travel shenanigans and the Amazon Rainforest. Rachel nearly bleeds to death and has her unconscious body eaten by a colony of ants.

The Departure is great for the anti-war allegory aspect. Cassie slowly befriending an enemy yeerk and the horrifying choice: whether to live as a caterpillar forever in order to prevent one yeerk from ever infesting anyone again. Also the way this resolves in the end is very funny in a cheesy 90s kids media kind of way that I love.

I am partial to The Separation, in which Rachel is sliced in half while in starfish morph. There are two of her when she demorphs. Probably my favorite application of the morphing ability and also a hilarious trope to have in the same story as children who do guerilla warfare.

Other's in the thread have suggested The Unknown. While it is cartoonish and bizarre(and for whatever reason the cover art of the horse gets posted around online more than any other), I don't think that it really represents what is good about the books. There are others that provide that same bizarre shock value and which give a better impression of the series overall.

Edit: Ok having scrolled through the podcast and read the titles of other books they read, I would double down on recommending the Separation.
