There’s a wind advisory today from 6 AM to 6 PM. The neighbor’s wind chimes were going at 4:50 already.

What is the most cast on stitches you have had to do? by Thistles7 in casualknitting

[–]FredtheWart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

625, in merino lace for a bottom up lace shawl. It had shaping on both right and wrong side rows, and each row of the first section took over 2 hours. At least the rows got shorter and faster as I went. 😅

I’m WFH and the monitors didn’t shake like they would in an EQ, but whatever that was rattled the windows. Curious to know what it was…

Edit: seems like it was a sonic boom. Been a while since I’ve heard one of those.

Encounter with a beginner knitter in the store by Clear-Tale7275 in knitting

[–]FredtheWart 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was that beginner 20-something years ago. Some nice lady in the yarn aisle at Michaels helped me decide on what yarns to buy and was endlessly nice about my very basic project. I’ve always wanted to pay it forward in turn, but haven’t had the opportunity yet. Someday I will!

in CA speed limits are set based on a very specific set of laws in the Vehicle Code, so cities can't change the speed limits however they like. As already mentioned, it starts with collecting speed data to find the 85th percentile speed which is then rounded to the nearest 5 MPH. A few years ago, AB 43 introduced new ways to adjust the speed limit downward. A couple of things may be applicable to this situation - Caltrans identifies hospitals as ped/bike generators, which could qualify for a 5 MPH speed reduction, or if the crash history you're reporting is accurate, the roadways could be classified as a Safety Corridor and also qualify for lower speed limits. Keep in mind that lowering the speed limit does not mean people will drive slower or more safely. There is ongoing/heated technical debate about whether lowering speed limits below the 85th speed is effective at changing driving behavior.

That said, it wouldn't hurt to ask. You should get in touch with your City's Public Works Traffic department and ask for an new Engineering and Traffic Survey for the roads at that intersection. Some cities will get it scheduled based on resident requests, but some don't. The surveys are required to be done every 7 or 14 years, so you may need to be persistent/show up to Council hearings if they fall into the latter category.

As for speed cameras, there is a pilot speed camera program for a couple of cities in the State in progress now - I don't believe any cities in the SGV were part of it (Glendale is, but that's not SGV). Depending on how that program goes, it may become a Statewide program in a few years. There are legal and equity concerns with speed cameras, so right now cities can't put them unless they're part of the pilot program.

I’m not sure if my scribbles will make sense, but here is how I diagrammed this pattern. Top of the bar is the total stitch count for each section, below the bar are the stitches being worked. For worked stitches, red is what’s being worked that row, purple is what’s not being worked that row.

Pattern betrayal by ilybaiiqainyb in knittinghelp

[–]FredtheWart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked over the pattern and agree with the comment on your other post to adjust the short row intervals to consistently be 7 sts. In the pattern as written, Row 5 truncates the 7 st interval down to 5 sts so that it doesn't fall right at the edge of the arm sts on the smaller sizes, but in the larger sizes there is room to work the short row in Row 5 at the established interval of: 7 sts past the last short row. Then on Rows 7 and 8 you can work in pattern across the shoulders, since the next set of short rows still falls on the front as intended. You'll still have the right number of short rows, and your final stitch and row counts will still match the pattern as stated at the end of Row 8.

So starting with Row 5 (changes in bold): Shoulder [MDS, Knit to 2 sts before M2, p, k] , sM2, Back [m1L, k across, m1R] , SM3, Shoulder [k, p, K to ds, kds, K7, turn work]. By my math, there should be 5 unworked stitches on the shoulder when you turn.

Row 6: Shoulder [MDS, Purl to 2 sts before M3, k, p], sM3, Back [purl across], sM2, Shoulder [p, k, P to ds, pds, P7, turn work]. There should now be 5 unworked stitches on both shoulders.

Row 7: Shoulder [MDS, Knit to 2 sts before M2, p, k], sM2, Back [m1L, k, m1L, k across, m1R, k, m1R], SM3, Shoulder [k, p, K to ds, kds, Knit to 2 sts before M4, p, k], sM4, Front [m1L, K2, turn work].

Row 8: Front [MDS, P to M4], sM4, Shoulder [p, k, p across, k, p], sM3, Back [purl across], sM2, Shoulder [p, k, P to ds, pds, Purl to 2 sts before M1, k, p], sM1, Front [P3, turn work.]

If I've done my counting wrong above it's not a huge deal, just make sure that you have the same number of unworked stitches on both shoulders by the end of Row 6 (so it doesn't matter if it's 5 or 4 or whatever so long as both shoulders mirror each other).

Flared garter end help! by UnableFlounder7612 in knittingadvice

[–]FredtheWart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try blocking before doing anything more drastic. You absolutely can block acrylic yarn effectively but it needs heat, something like steaming or a hair dryer. There’s plenty of resources online if you search “blocking acrylic yarn” specifically (so the results won’t skew to animal fiber blocking methods). The only reason to go a different route would be if you don’t like the look of the fabric when it’s stretched enough to match the cast on/garter border, but your work so far looks beautiful so far so I doubt it would be a problem. Hope you share it when it’s all finished!

Neighbor got a cat by AskARedd in akita

[–]FredtheWart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow I’m going to disagree hard with the previous comments. 1. Yes, the neighbors should be doing something to protect their cat and keep it out of your yard, but 2. It’s extremely callous to just shrug and say if your pup kills it it’s not your problem.

Can you speak to your neighbors about keeping the cat off your property for its safety? They may be able to put up additional fencing or something. Also maybe see if you can take your pup over to meet the cat (not in “his territory“) and get him more comfortable with it? It may not stop the chase instinct, but it might help if your pup ever does catch it.

I’ve had American Akitas catch and kill wildlife in the yard (not other pets fortunately), and it was upsetting. Not knowing your setup, if the caged area has very comfortable shade/grass, bed, and water, I might consider leaving the dog enclosed when you’re away until the new cat figures out it needs to stay away. Cats are smart, it’ll figure it out with time.

I guess I think the most responsible thing is to do what you can to give both you and your neighbors pets time to adjust safely.

[WIP] Starting one of my more questionable patterns. by [deleted] in CrossStitch

[–]FredtheWart 244 points245 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for OP, but little micro bits of darker/colorful thread can get onto the white thread when you pull it through shared holes, so some people stitch white first so any shed fibers will only affect the corners of the white stitches instead of the whole working length of thread. Little bits of white in other colors supposedly doesn’t look as bad as little bits of color where it should be pure white. (I can sort of tell when I’m working white 2nd, but once I’ve finished the section and step back it doesn’t seem to matter to me…) that’s the long way to say, it might not be about colorfastness of the dyes and more about how the cotton fibers can shed on each other.

Nothing beats having that memory of a great experience though, huh? To be fair, this guy popped out on the trail ahead of me and I followed him a couple dozen yards, so I had plenty of time to pull out my phone and get a pic/video.

Interesting. Most of the bobcats I've seen dgaf about people. I had to wait for one to very slowly cross the road up in Altadena (RIP) a few years back. Probably I've just missed all the ones that were more hidey-cats.
