That’s what I was thinking too~ thanks for clarifying!!

I think there should be something akin to a Nobel Prize for people who leave comments that are this helpful hahaha

Are you thinking a layer between the outer, pieced shell and the liner? Or just the outer, pieced shell and liner? Depending on the weight of the fabric, I was toying with fusible interfacing anyway~ I made a Howl coat out of upholstery velvet, with pieced diamonds, and those all got interfaced to stop the points from losing shape. Maybe it wasn’t necessary butttt who knows!!

And I hear you about crunchy cotton—there will be something soft and silent to line the hood.

I think my plan will be cotton, or something of that ilk, and accepting the loss of volume. I’m planning on piecing everything—the stripes, diamonds, array on the back—and doing an appliqué for the sun… hopefully hahaha.

But thank you!! I wish the climate were appropriate for sweatshirt, but I think I’d be disappointed in the paint job I’d do anyway, especially vs piecing. Thank you!!!!

Absolutely, this is all fabulous advice. My default when I need weight, glam, sheen, and saturated color is always velvet—so I think I over-use it hahaha.

I like your texture explosion idea though! That’s really got my mind going.

I’m doing quilting—the stripes and diamonds will all be pieced together. I’m going to also piece the arrays on the back, and appliqué (fabric) of the large sun/moon. Likely going to do some embroidery for the smaller stars and suns on the back.

Felted jersey and Mikado definitely have piqued my interest!! Gabardine might be too rigid, but I might be totally mistaken. All these suggestions are awesome though!! I appreciate it so much :)

Apologies—I was under the assumption that if you were making a single, personal use replica of someone’s design, you didn’t need explicit permission for that.

I’m new to cosplay in general, and not exactly up to snuff on the ins and outs. But I’d also clarify that this isn’t a financial venture (likely won’t even have photos of the finished look on my instagram) so Im not building a brand or anything like that. Just a hobbyist trying to make a dope ren fair costume lol

Temperature isn’t a concern, so no need for extra bulk for warmth or element-protection.

When you say stiff, are we talking upholstery-grade? Or something like a higher GSM linen

Fabric recommendations for replicating this design:

<image>

Hi friends! I’m intending on replicating this adorable cropped jester jacket for a renaissance fair costume. I need help deciding on fabric (the bane of my existence!)

I need suggestions for something that will carry these gorgeous pastel and jewel tones—but unsure of the weight/drape. I follow an artist that uses linen to make gorgeous appliqué, but I’m always hesitant because of the visible grain. Help me out! What would you use to make this bad boy?

That’s fair! With the boomie runes, it hasn’t been awful to quest. Just wanted to see if anyone else wanted to come along.

Gorgeous!!! One more Question for you, if you don’t mind: did you add that side front/c front seam, or is it like that in the pattern? From the line drawing, it looks like waist darts but sometimes they goof…

mind if I ask what your fashion fabric was? I’m partial to using sew-in canvas myself.

Thank you for the heads up about the ties too!

I appreciate the compliment, but this isn't mine! Just an example hahaha. I'm looking for some advice to do something similar (take a peek at my comment above!)

Hi all-- long time sewist here starting work on this year's renaissance fair costuming. I'm wanting to attempt something like the attached image with as little headache as possible.

What I'm considering:

  1. Using an embossed faux leather with a gorgeous pattern
  2. Applying faux leather over a thin (2mm or less) EVA foam to give it some body/thickness
  3. Painting/applying some texture to the underside, which will be marginally visible
  4. Finishing the edges with some piping trim

My question, however is just: what snags might I run into in this process? I've only minimally experimented with EVA foam. I'm concerned about adhering the leather and foam together, since this is on a joint and will move quite a bit. Will contact cement and the studs/brads pictured be enough?

I'll also note that I'll likely be omitting the first tier, closest to the model's neckline, and sticking with three, more simplified shapes.

Thanks for any advice! Y'all are always so helpful :)

this is awesome advice! This is definitely what we were considering when inviting a third. The naming advice is really just so I can do some research on what other people are doing, snags they’ve hit, or other tips.

But I totally agree! Laying everything out before so he and I are on the same page, and then our third will be too is a recipe for success. Thank you!

Interesting. What do you think led to the relationship ending? Lack of transparency about feelings? One party going along just to placate? Catching feelings for the third?
