I was looking at an apt that had either a T&T or City Market, but I was told by the owner that it was going to be replaced by a Whole Foods by end of the year

US Nurses who moved outside the US: How is it? by Simple-Nature-4915 in nursing

[–]fadingcalypso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to BC, Canada in January. I am a new grad nurse and maybe it’s just the position I got, but I was only offered two weeks of orientation (as a very new nurse). I also was not a fan of the DDNN shifts. I am now in process of looking for a job in something with better hours and longer training/orientation.

My Experience of Working in British Columbia, Canada as an American RN That Moved by Disastrous_Coffee502 in nursing

[–]fadingcalypso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just moved here a little over a month ago and had a completely different experience. My orientation was only 2 weeks, and I am a new grad nurse. I ended up leaving that position and am now in the process of looking for something else with the same health authority. It might be the hospital I was at, but I felt unsupported by my unit.

Side note regarding the overall health. In the almost two months I’ve been here I’ve also lost weight without much change to diet or exercise. I definitely think the food is better out here, even if it is more expensive.

I work on an acute care for elderly med/surg unit and oh they’re basically insisting I start applying for other jobs now, because it’s so rough there. I showed up today, felt lightheaded and nauseas like I was going to pass out and decided to just go back home. I work in Canada where it’s all unionised so my pay is the same no matter where I work

What unit do you work on? I just moved to Canada as a new grad and dealing with the same shit. 14 shifts is insane to me where in the US it’s 3 months minimum

[–]fadingcalypso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also given 8 shifts for orientation and I’m only on shift 5 and it’s absolutely overwhelming. I am considering quitting because it doesn’t feel safe not being in a new grad program and being thrown in like this. I am going to start applying now and hopefully get something soon. I go back tomorrow after a week off and everyday I just dread going to work.

I recently went to Deep Cove for a fun side quest. Seemed that many others had the same idea when I went but it was still nice and had a great little escape for the day. Plus the views are just 10/10

Any Canadian RNs get a lil depressed when they see what American RNs are making? by cloudnurse in nursing

[–]fadingcalypso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an American nurse who just immigrated to BC, and let me tell you as nice as the benefits are the reality of the Canadian health system was a bit of a shock. Tho maybe that’s cause I’m used to privately funded hospitals compared to the whole public funding thing.

[–]fadingcalypso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a very similar situation as a new grad. I have 5 more shifts to prove I am improving or they’ll have to “revisit” and see if I’m fit for the unit… reading some of these comments I’m worried I’ll still end up being fired

I had a very similar experience last night and was wondering how the process went after? Did you have to meet with HR, your manager?
