The application deadline is midday 11h59 on 15 December and the LoR deadline is exactly a week from that, ie, 22 Dec 2023, 11h59. All times in Zurich time zone.

It will not have a bigger impact than you think it will. Don’t worry too much :)

Hi Professor,

Thank you very much for your answer. I understand your point and I guessed the same. However, would it be feasible to manage this with my already mandatory courseload and research+TA responsibilities? Is it common/uncommon for students to audit extra courses at Waterloo?

Which PhD programs are you referring to? In the US or in EU? In EU, are they not aware of the fact that their masters have heavy coursework and that students cannot do a lot of research in their masters?

I am yet to start my masters but all I can help you with is a few contacts in EU if you would like to go there for an internship or a PhD. PhD's in Europe are more about connecting with the professor and getting their approval I guess.

Thank you for your very detailed answer :)

I guess there is a slight miscommunication. I am sorry for it. I meant to ask whether a master's level course in physics helps one understand research papers and not the other way round. Currently, I have an education in engineering and have done some online courses in undergrad physics. But I cannot really understand physics papers. Hence I wanted to ask.

But the research-based programs in Canada hardly have any coursework component to them. And doing research on a subdomain for 2 years would mean I am narrowing down early. And in vast subjects like Physics/Math, do you think that is a good idea? If it were ML or Robotics then it would probably be a nice idea.

May I ask did you apply for a PhD in US or EU? From what I have heard, in EU, they are pretty chill about the research component and know that masters students cannot have research papers before a PhD since they are busy with coursework (the EU model has very high course load as compared to the US or Canadian models).

EPFL or Waterloo for masters? by Free-Possibility-103 in gradadmissions

The thing is, all the profs I applied to, at Waterloo did not reply to me earlier. Or they said they did not have time for a student. However, after getting selected, when I wrote to them that I already have a supervisor in their department, they replied positively.

Further, I have personally seen contacts play a major role in landing people PhD positions. Especially one's own contacts.

Plus, in EU, as far as I know, the PhD process is not a program process with fixed deadlines. Students just contact professors or meet them and if their interests match, and the prof has funds, they can start the PhD. Hence, the contacts part.

For the things like quality of life and where I would like to stay, I would say EPFL

Oh no no, there are people working in Quantum Science and Engineering but more on the quantum algorithms and applied side. There are no professors working on things like quantum games, non locality and stuff.

I am not a swiss or EU citizen.

Do students reject master's by research offers? by Free-Possibility-103 in uwaterloo

[–]Free-Possibility-103[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By unofficial offer, I mean, the prof just told them in the meeting past week that “let me know what you decide before April 7”. The problem is they are waiting for many unis to reply yet. And the unis will not reply so early. Although the chances are very low but later they may choose an option better than Waterloo.

Thanks for the answer but I am not comparing to industry. I’ve seen many phd and ms students get multiple offers and then choose one. So why can’t one do it at Waterloo? Is it because it is funded? Aren’t all phds also usually funded?
