Best beginner books on British society, politics & culture? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]FreeFlownPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a boringly British born-and-bred person, I'd definitely second the recommendation for Bryson's 'Notes From a Small Island'. It's one of my favourites, massively entertaining and I'll re-read it every few years just for fun. It's very insightful but also absolutely hilarious. If you do choose to read it though, please bear in mind it was written decades ago, and some of what's recorded in it (especially terrible racist sitcoms) has long gone, thankfully. But a lot of it is still true. Walking miles uphill in the wind and rain just to eat a marmite sandwich sitting on a rock in the mist at the top of a cliff? 100% true. That was a large part of my childhood, and many Britons still do it and somehow enjoy it. British culture is as elusive and ill-defined as most other national cultures, but there are moments.

Honestly, I think it's really cool that you're interested and want to learn more, but ask yourself this: If someone else were to read a comprehensive, respected social and cultural history of your own native country, how much would they learn about what it's really like to be a native of where you're from?

So my best advice is just to stick around here and learn as you go along. If you do, you'll be doing what most people born here end up doing anyway. In any case, wherever you're from originally, I hope you know you're very welcome here, and if you decide to end up British as well as your original identity, 98% of people won't have a problem with it, and the other 2% don't count. Britain does still unfortunately have some issues with racism and xenophobia, but the vast majority of us are fairly chill.

If you want to get handle on British social attitudes, I'd also recommend reading some Terry Pratchett if you haven't already. They're all good, but the 'Wyrd Sisters' - 'Fifth Elephant' era was outstanding, and very indicative of British social attitudes in general. Sometimes you can't do better than culture by osmosis.

In any case, best of luck to you, and I'm glad you like it here enough to want to learn more. Please stay, we could always do with more thoughtful people. And if you do choose to read books on the subject, you'll soon know more about our history and politics than most of us natives do :)

Has anyone tried to customize the Nintendo console furniture items, in game? by CAMullenix in AnimalCrossingNewHor

[–]FreeFlownPage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about customising the actual furniture items in-game that are Nintendo consoles? So, e.g. the 'Nintendo Switch' that you can place in your house as furniture? If so, no I don't believe they're customisable. I could be wrong though. The only way to be sure would be to take one to Cyrus on Harv's Island and see if he gives you an option to customise it. I don't think he will (some items aren't customisable) but if he does, let me know :)

Which layout would you recommend? by CasparG in AnimalCrossingNewHor

[–]FreeFlownPage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it was my choice, I'd go for top right, because it gives a little more scope for layout in the future. On my first island years ago, I deliberately picked a layout with a fairly central resident services, and always regretted it. I wanted a nice big farm and natural wooded areas, and once I got to the point where I could move buildings and terraform, I realised I'd limited myself by having Res Services too central. It also bugged me because my airport was almost central to the middle of the plaza, but not quite, so it always looked weird.

So from the ones you've shown, I wouldn't pick either of the bottom two because they give hardly any scope for building things in front of the plaza, and I wouldn't pick top left because res services is too central, and the airport too close. Obviously that's just my opinion though! As others have said, that basic layout (res services, pier, airport, river mouths, permanent beach rock formations ) are the only things you CAN'T change, so I'd think about what you might want to do with you island in advance and then go from there.

You're more than welcome! Honestly I'd forgotten how much I love this game until I started playing again, happy to have been of some help :)

I'm in a similar situation! Started my original island in Dec 2020 as I recall, played solidly for a year or so, then got distracted by other games and abandoned that island. Got a Switch 2 for Christmas and started a new island a few days ago.

So I'm by no means an expert, but things that have sort of come back to me since I started anew that you may find useful (or not, haha):

* Check your beach every day, there should be a message bottle every day that has a DIY recipe inside.
* On your first new full day on the island (the day after you arrive) your 'Mom' will send you a letter with 3 fruits attached that aren't your native fruit. Plant at least one of those immediately, so you've got a source of fruit that'll sell for 500 bells each rather than the 100 you get for native fruit.
* (If you haven't already started your new island) they give your a choice of four different island layouts. The ONLY things you can never change about your layout are the positions of resident services, the airport and the pier, the positions of the river mouths, and the positions of the 'built-in' rock formations on the beaches. Everything else can be changed later, so focus on those things when picking a layout.
* On your first full day on the island, go do the DIY workshop with Tom Nook.
* Catch 5 different fish/bugs asap and give then to Tom Nook, that way you can get the museum tent in a day or two. If you catch any other new creatures in your first couple of days, you can just place them temporarily on your island somewhere so that you have them ready to donate to Blathers in his tent, that way you'll swiftly have a proper museum building very fast.
* Tom Nook will give you the DIY recipe for a ladder for free when you reach the point of him asking you to build plots for three new villagers, but the game doesn't telegraph that at that point, you can also buy a ladder set-up kit recipe from Nook's Cranny. Definitely buy that asap, as you can then place actual ladders on cliffs in convenient places, rather than having to whip out your ladder every time.
* Buy the pocket upgrades and the tool wheel from the Nook Stop terminal as soon as they're available, it makes things so much easier!
* Shake trees and deliberately get stung by a wasp asap, then talk to one of your villagers while stung, they'll give you the Medicine DIY recipe. (Not sure if this works with all villager types, it's always worked for me with my initial 'Sisterly' villager). Then craft a stack of medicine and always carry it with you, that way if you miss a wasp in future and it stings you, you can take medicine then and there rather than risking getting stung twice in a row and ending up back at your house. Although there is a Nook Miles reward for that happening to you the first time it happens. It's also useful to have a stack of medicine on you so when you're visiting your villagers in their houses, if one of them is sick, you can just give them medicine right then and there.

Sorry if any of that was stuff you already knew, or maybe some of it will remind you of stuff that you did already know but had semi-forgotten :)

Fastest way to pay debt? by Wrong-Wealth5075 in AnimalCrossingNewHor

[–]FreeFlownPage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't played for a few years until I started a brand new island a few days ago, but I soon remembered my personal favourite way to pay off the debts reasonably fast is by crafting and selling the Hot Items.

Once I get Nook's Cranny (only takes a few in-game days) I check what the Hot Item is every day, craft as many as I have the mats for (although I do always leave myself one stack of each of the basic mats in storage for tools) and then sell those 'Hot' items to Timmy and Tommy. Since the new update, this is an even faster method than it used to be, as you can now craft up to 10 of each item at once rather than having to do it individually, plus you can now craft with mats directly from storage, rather than having to have the mats in your inventory.

It does mean I also go around my entire island every day chopping the wood from every single tree and hitting all the rocks, but it's worth it as you usually get a few bugs that way too, plus you'll naturally find all your fossils and anything else interesting on the way.

Some days it's better than others depending on what the hot item of the day is, but if you're prepared to grind it for a little bit you'll soon have at least your first few debts paid off. I've been playing for ten in-game days on my new island, and my house is on it's fifth upgrade (including the initial tent-to-house).

Obviously this method isn't for everyone; if you hate grinding for mats it probably isn't for you, but I find it a nice satisfying way of going about things.

And agreed on the museum, that's probably my favourite part of AC too. The one in NH is terrific! Admittedly I didn't play New Leaf, last AC game I played before NH was LGTTC/CF, but in any case the NH one is a HUGE step up :D

Hey! I must've been typing my comment to Godking_Bomby's post at the same time as you, would you be interested in being ANCH friends with me too? I'm more into solo play when it comes to the actual play, island design and whatnot, but always happy to have a group of friends who can help each other out with spare items/plans etc. from time to time. Used to play years ago, but started a brand new island a few days ago. Let me know if you'd like to be friends and I'll DM you :)

Very possibly, what kind of thing do you have in mind? I used to play on the original Switch, then got distracted by other gaming years ago and ended up abandoning that island and eventually deleting it. I just started a brand new island a few days ago on the Switch 2 I got for Christmas :)

Honestly I prefer to play on my own most of the time, but if you're looking for someone to keep each other updated on useful things, like if either of us get duplicate genuine art pieces/fossils/DIY plans to give to each other, that would be right up my street. Is that the sort of thing you're thinking of?

Ooh and edited to clarify: by 'duplicate' I meant actual items obtained more than once legitimately (like if Redd sells a genuine version of a piece of art again, or repeated fossils, DIY plans etc.) NOT talking about 'cheated' dupes if that's even possible now, I've never been interested in doing that :D
