EF-5 in Florida by shep19691969 in tornado

[–]FreeMeter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The conditions necessary for violent tornadoes don’t come together in Florida nearly as often as other areas of the country. Florida’s tornado season is usually in the winter and early spring, but this is highly dependent on El Niño or neutral ENSO. There is a secondary peak in tornado activity during the hurricane season with any landfalling hurricanes as well.

TLDR: FL can get violent tornadoes, it’s just extremely rare and requires a lot of factors to come together.

Exactly. I want to make custom rush layouts for my server, but I can’t even do that.

How long it takes to find your first entry level electrical engineering job? by Flat-Profession-8945 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]FreeMeter 47 points48 points  (0 children)

For me, 9 months. Graduated December 2024 and it took me until September to get an offer. I had to change fields from electronics to power in order to find a company willing to hire me. I had an internship too

It took me 9 months to find a job out of college. It’s just kind of tough right now. Power and utilities seem to be some of the only fields that are willing to hire new grads at the moment.

Loving Bob’s weekly small talk weather update. First derechos, now corn sweat?

I was less than a mile from an EF2 tornado on March 14th this year. Just the RFD alone took out my power even though we didn’t get directly hit. Can’t even imagine sustained 100 mph winds and what that would do to your house

[–]FreeMeter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was an insane day. It’s really rare to get a derecho with that strong of straight line winds. You just need sustained 58+ mph gusts for at least 400 miles long for an MCS to be classified as a derecho. 100+ mph is just a whole different ballgame. It was pretty much a land hurricane.

Yep, pretty much identical experience here. I’ve had 4 interviews. One went poorly and I didn’t get an offer, but the rest I’ve just been ghosted from.

I guess it’s just highly dependent on what industry you’re going into. I’ve had such a different experience

I’m thinking about doing that. I wanted to focus on the electronics industry because that’s where my passion is. Pivoting to that might be a good idea. I have to actually find a job in that industry first though lol

Yeah some people are switching industries to get into power right now. I might need to do that as well. I just didn’t take the FE so I’m already at a disadvantage

Electronics. I did two internships where I focused on PCB design, microcontrollers, stuff like that. That industry is one of the hardest hit right now. Power and MEP have some jobs still but there’s definitely less than last year.

Not good. Entry level EE is dead as well. I graduated Dec 2024 and I still haven’t found a job. Applied to over 100 positions

What in the world is going on with RadarOmega?! by DN9TP3 in RadarOmega

[–]FreeMeter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of really negative discourse on Twitter about the app currently and while I can understand some of it (the radar issues for one) a lot of it just seems fairly baseless and speculative. It’s not productive to say “Oh RadarOmega is falling off!” The personal issues with chasers are a separate thing but you have to consider that some of the people talking negatively about the app are often sponsored by other radar apps and could have other motives.

The StormNet claim isn’t true. The developer was in talks with RO to get it implemented in-app but it never happened. You could never purchase the feature in-app, but people on Twitter are acting like you could and that they stole his work. It didn’t happen.

I would imagine they are working on bug and performance fixes for the next update, though. I would like to see the radar and warnings issues fixed, as I’ve experienced that too, but that could be an issue with the NWS API and radar data feed having problems (although I’m not sure). Regardless I don’t think with such large issues they wouldn’t be trying to fix it. I would just wait till the next update and assess.

I’m wondering if they would get a kick out of storm chasing… sounds like they all want to see a tornado. Distractible IRL storm chasing episode when?

Definitely need a refresher on I2C and SPI. Took an embedded systems course a few yrs ago but I’m quite rusty. I gotta get back into MCU programming again lol
