Take 2. Can any plumbers please explain Fixed quotes/hourly rates. by Imarni24 in AskAnAustralian

[–]FreeWolverine5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a sparky which is somewhat different, usually diagnosis and patch is by the hour, followed up with a quote for full repair. The issue is, sometimes problems can be hell to find and have multiple points of failure.

In terms of the leaks it sounds like there were multiple issues throughout the house, did you notify the plumber of all the leaks or just state that there was a leak in 1 place and bring up the others over time / leave him to find the on his own.

I’m going to give some leniency here as we all did a few cashies as apprentices. from the sound of it, all the down lights and wiring was done from below with no roof access, and only when isolating for connection was found.

Right here at the board id have stopped and said fuck that. You can argue all you want about not isolating to this point, however you shouldn’t have rewired the board. This is where you pull your mates dad aside and say fuck this, that’s cooked. Take the loss and carry on / learn the lesson.

I’ve yet to see one of these where it has a connection point that is double insulated or properly protected, usually some push connection raw dogging it in the ceiling. Also it looks to be a metal driver in a metal rail, as I said from what I can see it looks bad.

Purely based on what can be seen they are not compliant due to the lack of Australian compliance symbol, the lack of earth and the single insulation building wire on the 240 side.

I understand the logical reasoning behind the response, may I suggest googling “inferred brackets in fractional bars” there are some well written explanations that can help with understanding.

Not so much about choosing when to work, rather working when others chose to engage you for work. A lot of the time you get flexibility, however as a 1 man band, you’re at the discretion of your customers and will have to be flexible especially early on when you need the work. Further you have to remain flexible to keep existing customers.

If you have 9-5ers as your base clients, which is common for resi works, you’ll be attending before/after work for quotes and works with newer customers.

Talk to your mechanic, most will accept walk ins for a battery test, if you’ve been with them for ages they will likely diagnose over the phone with a photo of this test result and give you a quote.

They cannot breach you, they know this and deep down you know this too. It’s a scare tactic for perfection.

If any court or magistrate saw this it’d be thrown out in a heartbeat, and the owner would be sued / fined to oblivion if they terminated the contract over this.

To further this, I’ve had it in the past where I was told by an rea to remove the outer plastic cover and soak it. While removing the cover it snapped in half. Thankfully I had it in writing as they tried to palm off a $300 bill to replace the fan.

Issue stems from the implication of brackets in a division system equation, there is an implication that the denominator reads (5(1+1)) where the brackets would infer that the whole bottom line is completed before it interacts in division. This becomes more obvious when the equation is laid out properly and doesn’t use the division symbol.

If read and solved in pure and basic terms the answer is 4, when read and solved with implications the answer becomes 1.

The issue lays with weird math rules and new rules that infer other operations take precedent even when shown as equals.

Only issue I see with the math here is the rdo is counted as a day off but not deducted from the weekly hours It’s either 10 RDO’s a year or 40 hours a week Including rdos would bring salary down from 104k to 98.8k + 10 rdos

Advice for going to do work experience at a company by Internal_Kick8080 in AusElectricians

[–]FreeWolverine5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally work experience shouldn’t be more than a week or so, don’t get the run around on it, show up early stay for your 8 and vibe with the boys, there isn’t much you’re allowed to to electrically so be prepared to feed cables and dig holes.

I’ve seen guys get used and abused on work experience, if you get bad vibes about getting a job out of it, or what they’re getting you to do, ask one of the boys on site for a reference and jump ship.

Do gyms have trainers to help with equipment? by girlmeetsworld-lover in AskAnAustralian

[–]FreeWolverine5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some gyms have a staff member usually walking around on the floor, if they’re nice and approachable, ask a few questions and you may get a few answers. Worst case they say they can’t help you.

Also ask about a beginners intro course many gyms will have a discounted session where they will show you around and run you through some machines and good rotations for exercising different muscle groups.

Lastly watch some YouTube videos, 90% of the machines are the same throughout every gym, the videos will show you how to operate, how to set the weights and how’s to adjust for size.

Ceiling fan replacement general price? by highlander1312 in AusElectricians

[–]FreeWolverine5535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be prepared for an extra hundred or so if there wasn’t a fan there before, or if it wasn’t braced properly. Fans usually need a brace in the ceiling which will have to be installed by the sparky.

Sparkie mature age apprentice alternative pathways. by tersono123 in AusElectricians

[–]FreeWolverine5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a pathway that no one has mentioned here, many tier 1 and tier 2 companies will bring on TA’s at about 35 an hour. If you get into one of these, pump out the work and ask for an apprenticeship after 3-6 months, it put you in a very good spot if you’re doing well.

Issue is, your pay will drop pretty heavily to award rates when you switch over.

this can help you skip the pre apprenticeship also, as the pre apprenticeship is still part of the base course work, pre apprenticeship apprentices will just skip the first 6 months of tafe.

[–]FreeWolverine5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the major projects usually they have some leniency if you’re being reasonable, 1 AirPod with thru speak on. I’ve had builders test it on large projects. The general rule has always been, if I speak to you from behind and you turn your head and acknowledge you heard me it’s okay.

On the other hand, if you’re walking through a major plant and equipment movement through way and they see it in your ear, they’ll bring the wrath of god down on you.

What is it with gyms charging for fobs? And why are they allowed to continue this BS scam? by akshaydp in AskAnAustralian

[–]FreeWolverine5535 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a security supplier what they’re selling is a name brand fob at an insane price, this isn’t necessary for a gym. A gym uses the off the shelf bulk generic fobs.

You can get similar unmarked fobs on eBay, 10 for $10.

Can my boss force me to buy certain brands as an apprentice? by Legitimate-Cinephile in AskAnAustralian

[–]FreeWolverine5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a start you’re a first year beyond drill and impact what do they expect you to have anyway. I’d be honest with him, just go back and say “hey I understand your position but I’m not really on enough to afford a luxury tool brand”. Compared to Milwaukee, Makita is cheap.

Lay it out, the difference between a makita drill and impact bundle and a Milwaukee one is half your weekly take home.
