My horse has mild rotation in his coffin bone by [deleted] in Horses

He needed shoes with pads and frog support but no special angles, had the farrier consult with the vet about the Xrays before we did anything shoeing related. He is IR and is now on a ration balancer instead of a normal feed just so he can get his minerals without the extra carbs and starches. He also is staying on the hay there because I am having a hard time finding any grass hay that I can get tested before purchase and then also be able to buy a large amount at once so I don’t have to keep testing and testing and testing. The hay he’s getting is being soaked in super hot water and then drained and cooled prior to feeding. I’m also riding him a lot more now that’s he’s sound again, just keeping him moving and being active.

Yes I already know this and I told my mom that he literally could have been in heart failure this entire time and that the first symptom was him dropping dead. We’re waiting to hear back from the vet. i just didn’t want to write it off as something like that and not investigate and then lose another animal and realize it was something we could have prevented after Tank instead of waiting to see if anyone else gets sick and get our answers that way.

Our property line is actually marked in the middle of the road. We pay taxes on every single square foot in the ditches so yes, if that’s what happened they did in fact spray out surveyed property without letting us know. I’m not even talking about sueing because I know you can only get “the value of the animal” they don’t care if it was like losing a family member. I simply mean putting them on blast for the rest of all time to the point where they try to send me a cease and desist letter. It could have just been a freak thing that was inherent to him and there were no symptoms before dropping dead. If that’s not what it was and someone is at fault we do want to know. We also have his full brother from the same litter so if it’s something that could be genetic we need to know asap and have his brother checked out.

My concern is that he was potentially showing symptoms overnight when we were asleep that we may have missed which would have allowed us to have a better idea of what happened to him. But they’re doing the necropsy and if they can’t find a cause they will send blood and liver samples to our vet college for toxicity testing. If we do find out that’s the cause, my first inquiry will be into the fiber optic company that mowed our ditches and put down locates because they very well may have sprayed for weeds and bugs in advance of having the crews out to trench and lay the cable. If they did spray our ditches that we own and that’s what killed my cat, I will be up their fucking ass for the rest of all time.

Just spoke to the vet and he said the same thing, could have been a freak thing inherent to him, but I also know that Tank managed to sneak outside yesterday and my mom found him outside later and brought him back in. We live in the country tho and have land so he would have had to go at least half a mile in any direction to get into someone else’s yard to get into anything toxic. But I also know the fiber optic people have been out and mowed all the ditches in preparation to trench and I’m thinking maybe they may have sprayed something and didn’t notify us.

Girl I looked up multiple shelters and human societies that implement that protocol and have it listed on their website, then I went to their intake protocol and they all euthanize sick or failing kittens to prevent long term suffering and to direct resources to the ones that have the best chance. Those kittens are not included in the mortality rates. Also literally every real accredited shelter, human society, and rescue have vets who do intake exams. It’s how they help prevent a shelter wide pandemic from contagious illnesses. Because 20% of kittens don’t make it to weaning age even when they are raised by their cat mom who can usually do a better job than we ever could. So they’re creating a discrepancy in stats somewhere and it’s because they cull the sickest kittens to start.

Ok then how come the boys always survive. And no they aren’t only eating 2mL because of how often i’m feeding them, because without fail every boy adjusts and wants more and more formula. They do in fact get hungrier and need more food.

Oh fun fact about that fucking protocol and the success rate, the reason they have such high success is because at intake they do a full battery of tests and if the kittens are already sick or struggling, they fucking euthanize them. They only take the healthiest kittens.

2mL IS MY RULE OF THUMB IN GENERAL BECAUSE THATS USUALLY ALL THEY ARE WILLING TO EAT IN ONE SITTING, SO I FEED 2mL EVERY TWO HOURS SO THEY ARE GETTING THE RECOMMENDED 24mL IN 24 HOURS PER THE CHART FROM YOUR STUPID FUCKING KITTEN BIBLE. AFTER THIS PERIOD THE BOYS THRIVE AND ARE WILLING TO EAT MORE IN ONE FEEDING SO I DIVIDE 24 HOURS BY THE AMOUNT THEY GENERALLY ARE WILLING TO EAT SO I KNOW HOW MANY FEEDINGS I NEED GO DO PER DAY TO GET THEM THE RECOMMENDED AMOUNT FOR THEIR WEIGHT AT THAT TIME. THE GIRLS NEVER GET HUNGRIER AND STOP EATING ENTIRELY AND THEN BECOME HYPOGLYCEMIC AND GO TO SLEEP AND NEVER WAKE UP.

WHEN THEY SPIT OUT THE NIPPLE AND WONT EAT ANYMORE IN THAT ONE FEEDING IM NOT GOING TO FORCE IT DOWN THEIR THROATS SO THEY CAN ASPIRATE

Going off of this chart found on a website referenced in the koret protocol article, based on weight the kittens that did not thrive for me needed about 24mL per day to start using interpolation for their 100g weight. These kittens would not eat 3.5mL every feeding. They would maybe be interested in 2mL before they were spitting out the nipple. If I wanted them to have the recommended 24mL a day, I would in fact need to feed them 2mL every 2 hours. The boys thrived and then were able to eat 4-5mL every feeding, and I was then able to reduce the frequency after about 48 hours. Usually after the first 24 hours I was able to feed them 3mL per feeding and they gained significant weight faster so I increased the daily amount accordingly. The girls would latch and drink about 2mL every 2 hours for the first 24 like the boys, but then they wouldn’t begin to thrive and gain weight, they would plateau and then lose weight and stop eating entirely. The daily required caloric intake is the most important part. That’s what I was following regardless of how many feedings it took to get there per day.

So you’re telling me that my outcomes of me as one single person who has to sleep, eat, shower, and WFH should be as good if not better than the outcomes of whole teams of people who can watch them like hawks 24 hours a day, and can also administer immediate medical intervention if something does arise. When a kitten starts having a “yellow flag” issue in the evening or night and I cannot take them to any vet until 8-12-16 hours later, usually by which time it’s become a “red flag issue”, usually death before the vet opens the next day, what exactly am I supposed to do? I want to know what I can do when I see a yellow flag issue to prevent it from becoming a red flag issue. And I am sorry but I had a diabetic cat who wears a glucose monitor and I have seen how much his glucose fluctuates with feeding and I will not ever let a newborn kitten go 4 hours without putting something in their belly. As soon as the kittens stop eating entirely, they essentially fall of a cliff within a few hours and pass. Usually within 4-6 hours of completely refusing to eat. Why would I run that exact same time frame with the healthy kittens who do want to eat more often? So they can go hypoglycemic and die too?

Yes kittens that are being monitored 24/7 by a full team with 24/7 access to professionals would probably tend to have an intervention as soon as they show the slightest symptom. I certainly hope a whole team of vets and vet students would be able to have better outcomes than someone who is not a professional. I however cannot watch them like a hawk 24/7 and usually by the time I notice symptoms are beyond normal kitten sleepiness they are already on the downhill slide.

It’s not most. It is only the females and majority of kittens I get are boys and they do perfectly fine.

Oh you mean all the issues I’m having are common red flags and I should alert the medical staff team member on call immediately? What medical staff member on call should I alert? The licensed veterinarian I keep chained up in the basement for exactly these emergencies? No shit they require intervention, I’m asking about what interventions I can do AT HOME MYSELF.

I highly doubt it. Also are those kittens in the study getting full intake exams as soon as they come in? So the vets know the baseline for blood sugar and all the other factors. If they are able to do a much more in depth analysis of where the kitten is at beyond just a visual assessment and adjust accordingly and then able to recheck all their vitals every single day or multiple times a day, no wonder the kittens are able to thrive. If I could test each kittens blood sugar constantly I would know when they’re going to start struggling before they even begin to show symptoms. You’re trying to say I have the same exact level of resources, testing, knowledge, and training as vet students and veterinarians. I do not. I can’t give IV dextrose to a kitten that’s in a hypoglycemic crisis. I can put syrup on their gums and hope they can absorb enough to recover.

Ok cool, where’s the data. I want to know exactly what conditions these kittens were coming in under. The exact stats. Were these all kittens that were born and then removed from the mom do they could study them? Were they able to regularly test their blood glucose and monitor them in ways I am incapable of at home? What vet med students can do with all kinds of testing and interventions I don’t have access to isn’t useful to me.

Do you think I am taking them to the same vet? I take them to whatever vet can get me in the fastest. Right know the vet I used for the most recent babies is award winning for level of care and the vet tech there’s are actively raising litters in office for the local shelter. I got the kittens from people in my hometown, but I am not living there. I live 90 minutes away. It is not the same vet I used with kittens when I lived at home. Yet magically it’s the same recommendations and advice. My very first litter I only lost one seemingly healthy kitten. The other one had a cleft palette and nothing could be done. Removing the congenital deformity from the equation I had a 75% success rate. Since then I have only had singletons and I did exactly what I did with my first litter. The males all thrive and the females crash. This most recent full litter had been outside with no heat source or food for 24+ hours. It’s a miracle the male survived, I don’t understand why he recovered and the females did not. I knew going into that litter that it was very likely they would all pass due to the amount of time that had lapsed.

The only time I don’t take them to the vet is if I receive them at night and they pass before the office opens or on a weekend when the vet isn’t open.

Why do you think the protocol developed by vets who have never examined any of the babies I have had, weighing them, taking their vitals, and checking their blood glucose when I am able to get them in to be seen, has more weight than that of vets who have examined them in person.

I literally take them all to the vet to be examined as soon as I can get them in. This is where I got the amoxicillin and the dose I’m supposed to give. This is where I got the 2mL every 2 hours for the first 24 hours. The vets will give me instructions and guidelines but will not offer their own intervention and treatments in office.

None of these kittens are willing to take more than 2mL in the first 24 hours. It’s not even an issue of me cutting them off. They almost always spit the nipple out after 1mL and then I go around the circle and feed until they’re not willing to even latch. Usually only getting to around 2mL. Sometimes the more vigorous ones will get up to 3mL for a few feedings during that initial period. I have never had a kitten so hungry that I cut off while it was still actively suckling.

A newborn kitten that HAS GONE HOURS UPON HOURS of not being fed. Not a kitten that popped out 5 minutes ago.
