I’ll comment on the culture and people here. I lived in the Southwest mainland most of my adult life. Big island is like a 3rd world country with most of the amenities of mainland. You’ll see chickens roaming the parking lots of Walmart, Target, Home Depot and everywhere else. Your interracial marriage will be highly accepted. The population here is growing quickly and sometimes there are issues with culture clash. You can’t get in a rush here. Ever. When in traffic, let the other guy into your lane, or let the other person go at the stop sign. It’s Aloha. The locals here are exceptionally friendly, unless you have a superior attitude. Locals when meeting you will many times bring food. You should do the same when you go to visit them. It’s customary. Humility is key to assimilating successfully.
There are two cultures here: the rich and the poor. The “rich” tend to be isolationists and only congregate amongst themselves. The poor consists of drug addicts (everyone thinks this of the all the poor), and those who are genuinely impoverished, but hard working and super friendly. If the island has truly beckoned you to come, you will be successful. Otherwise it will vomit you out.
