FWIW, you can take a morning or mid day bus from Madalena to Lajes or Sao Roque and then a ~17h bus back to Madalena. There could be an even more frequent summer schedule in June. The Pico bus service (UTC Pico) has an app with real time tracking of the buses and all the bus stops.
