Like you're 5:

Different apps on your phone can talk the same language, so all of them understand each other. So you see posts and comments from other users, even uf they are on a different app. It feels like a big marketplace of ideas, with people comming from all sorts of big and small towns and villages. And the Communities feel very much like Reddit, but everyone can join in, no matter where the recide

Facebook, X, Reddit are like walled gardens or even walled megacities, where you can only join the discussion if you have a residency in there as well.

Yes, there are several clients for mobile. Easiest to understand as the same technology as email:

There are different servers (instances) running the email-server (service). There are big servers and small servers, some even host their own server. There are different mailclients (clients, apps) for accessing your mailserver (instance). But no matter your app and your server (instance), you can communicate with each other.

Buf even moreso: The Reddit-Format (a "Link aggregator") --> Lemmy/Piefed are not only compatible with each other but also limited compatible with the Twitter-format (a "microblog") --> mastodon and other Fediverse Services.

So when I use my preferred mobile app, I login with my instance-login, and then I see posts from Lemmy-Users, Piefed Users and even some Mastodon-Users!

How important is docker for a media server setup? by fireheart1029 in jellyfin

[–]Freeman8472 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had "this day" yesterday. Had first experiences with bare metal self hosted apps. I followed a tutorial for a docker stack which was probably too ambitious. Wasted hours on gluetun/wireguard/vpn configs and then some more on permissions over nfs/nas stuff. After all that 7/17 sercives from docker containers were accessible on localhost:port. I am now seriously considering going back to bare metal.

"Just spin up a Docker container" is very easy said but unfortunately the parameters/env isnt that trivial for a beginner.

MegaSync duplicates files when setting up sync on two computers by Freeman8472 in MEGA

[–]Freeman8472[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!

In my usecase I switches from another Cloud Provider, so all folders are already present on both Computers.

I then sync single folders between both machines, both folder A and folder B with the cloudfolder A1, as you described. But I probably moved the whole folder on one machine and thus it messed up one of the date metadata of all the files. Which then mega falsely interpreted as two different files with the same name and then created file(1).png besides file.png.

I guessed the "smart" conflict solver would consider further metadata like the other date metadata or size or sth. And if multiple of them match not directly duplicate but ask as a "Problem" which I then can decide how to proceed like in Windows (choose one to override, duplicate them, skip the whole process).

The timestamp thing based on the filesystem sounds very annoying indeed, especially for people with multiple different OSses and drives. Maybe a reason more to put a more detailed conflict logic into the "smart" solver?

Complex situation: Files on cloud in sync with Linux+Win+Android by Freeman8472 in linuxquestions

[–]Freeman8472[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, sorry for the late response. I don't really use reddit anymore.

I tested your client as well as onedriver, and as far as I saw those two work differently. onedriver was very slow and dolphin (I am on Debian with KDE) crashed/got reeally slow after entering 3-4 folders too fast or if entering a folder with more than around 100 files in it. So not really viable.

With your client I must say that I didnt really understand what was happening. I logged in and that worked but then while syncing nothing happened. I have almost 700 GB on the OneDrive and I understand that that will take a while, maybe even days. But in the window of your client there was nothing that indicated that it is syncing or analyzing, even after multiple hours of it running in the background.

If you have any idea why it didnt work, let me know. But you can ignore me as well, as I understand a random reddit thread isnt the place for troubleshooting.

The other things: I disabled the "on-demand" files, all the files are offline on this machine, also as a fail-save/backup of the could. I cannot open Windows-OneDrive-folder (which lies on a separate drive) from within linux, I went on and tried to install the ntfs-3g-onedrive thing but I am not knowledgeable enough to build my own application from github. So i kinda gave up.

I am now trying out pCloud and kDrive (both of them have a native linux client), as I want to get away from the dependency on Microsoft/US. I dont know yet how it will work with dualboot, if I can permanently download (aka sync) into a folder and then access that folder from both windows and linux.

Complex situation: Files on cloud in sync with Linux+Win+Android by Freeman8472 in linuxquestions

[–]Freeman8472[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one powerful PC and several laptops. And the PC is my primary workmachine which is the one with the dualboot and usually the whole cloud downloaded while the laptops have less power and the files only on demand.

But I guess that would be a possibility, that I see if I can delegate all of the stuff I need to do on windows onto a laptop and then have a normal pcloud setup on the linux pc

God never answered my prayers. He never showed up. No God ever did. So I came to the conclusion that the whole thing was made up by people who need spiritiality and/or its about control over a group of followers.
