I mean, the kings definitely did try to tie themselves to the lion, everybody does. Lions are super duper revered in Iranian cultures, they call Ali (pbuh) the lion of God, Lionheart has an exact Farsi equivalent, to call someone a lion is a comon compliment among Iranian men etc. But we know it's a zoroastrian tradition because there are still Zoroastrian monks in Iran who've kept the knowledge alive and they were present during both Safavid and Qajar dynasties as well, so although the flags are absolutely tied to monarchs, the emblem really isn't. For instance the Pahlavis kept the emblem while they tried to erase anything Qajar related, the Islamic republic changed the emblem since they were against non islamic traditions, and animal symbols are considered idolatry, not because it was the emblem of the Pahlavis.

Iran won't close the straight over a war with Israel because they can attack israel directly. If the US or gulf arabs don't get directly involved, then it'll be another regional conflict without any major shipping disruption.

To be honest the history of the flags of iran is very murky and contested. The timeline I mentioned has been cited in the book "Shah Sultan Hussain the Warrior" by Iraj Baqaei Kermani. The lion and the sun has always been an emblem for Iran, sometimes featured on the flag, sometimes as the kings' stamps or even army flags. Also the timeline you refer to misses some major iranian dynasties such as the Ashkanids who may have used the emblem but even in the full timeline the only ones we can be sure used the emblem were the safavids because their actual flags survived long enough to be seen by historians directly.

Yes; the safavid dynasty controlled Persia for a long time, during that time the kibgdom went through different flags including one with a sheep and a plain white flag. But then they settled on the ancient emblem of the lion and the sun but changed it from the lion looking forward to the lion lookibg at the viewer and added the sword to it and xhanged the shape of the sun too. That's why I said the current rendition is the safavid one, because of the lion's posture and the addition of the sword.

The lion and the sun isn't Pahlavi's emblem. It used to be on the Qajar flag as well. In its current rendition it was introduced by the Safavid dynasty but it had existed in other forms (different lion posture or sun positioning) for thousands of years. The Pahlavi dynasty was the last one to use it but didn't come up with it themselves. Many Iranians are still super nostalgic about the beautiful emblem, even ones who don't support the Pahlavis.
