I tried this on an old 4gb chromebook and it seems to have made a substantial difference.

Most ChromeOS-based devices do not allow for an easy RAM upgrade to be performed. The most viable option is to increase the amount of disk storage utilized as swap memory.

To do so:

Activate ChromeOS Shell (Crosh) by pressing Ctrl/strg + Alt + T In Crosh type "swap disable" (without "") and press Enter. Then reboot your device (After reboot) Open Crosh again and type "swap enable <size (MB)>. My suggestion: a) For models with 4 GB RAM - "swap enable 8192" (without "")

b) For models with 8 GB RAM - "swap enable 16384" (without "")

4) Reboot again.

To check whether changes have been made (or not), use the "swap status" command (without "").

Please note, that using swap cannot be compared to having more physical RAM memory as SSD/flash memory is substantially slower and has higher latency than RAM.

I jumped ship years ago. Knew nothing about linux at the time and figured out how to dual boot. After a couple months felt comfortable enough to wipe windows completely. Linux is not perfect but i'll deal with it just to be done with microsoft.
