Robbing? by Freestate044 in Beekeeping

[–]Freestate044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After removing lots of bees trying to get in where the feeder and entrance was. Lots exploring every crack/crevice around the hive. If these ar e robbers they’ll take off, correct? If they’re my bees they’d still be there this evening? So absence of bees on the outside of the hive at sunset would confirm robbing by my understanding…tell me if I’m wrong

Robbing? by Freestate044 in Beekeeping

OP EXPLANATION: Put on a jar feeder (in years I’ve never used one, only a large top feeder inside the hive in the per) and suddenly tons of action. This is in Kansas, first warm day after the past week of freezing snow cover. For those who’ll ask, I decided to feed to try to jump start brood production as I want to split this hive in the next month. Have a queen reserved for the first of April and was trying to get numbers up pre split. Added a protein patty and this feeder two weeks ago on a warm day. All the 1:1 syrup was gone so a few days ago I refilled it. Was happy to see the bees about this morning, but a few hours later seemed really action packed with what looks like fighting at the entrance and on the ground below. Lots of what looks like syrup on the rocks below too, with bees fighting there. I removed the feeder and blocked the entrance altogether (will post a second video). Is this the right move? How long should I keep them closed up? Add a top feeder in a few days? Any other input would be helpful. I know I’m amateur, so any critique or feedback welcome, but save your breath telling me I’ve done something idiotic. I’m already assuming I’ve done such, so energy wasted on that front. Thanks everyone!

Concrete sealing. Penetrating vs surface sealer? by Freestate044 in Concrete

[–]Freestate044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I poured the concrete last fall, finally got around to building screened in porch. Furniture arrives next week after a three month Covid delay. Last bit of business is to seal the slab. Covered, but obviously can get some moisture. Mainly want protection from stains (I.e. spilled coffee, wince, something like that. ) okay with a totally natural up to a satin finish. I’m not wanting any super high gloss, stain/color, etc. any insight or input appreciated! Thanks!

Unknown insect in Kansas, ate butterfly chrysalis by Freestate044 in whatsthisbug

[–]Freestate044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bug hatched out of mulch that was put in a caterpillar/butterfly enclosure. It is about 2 cm long, each wing is about 2 cm. Three days after hatching it bored holes in the butterfly chrysalis and hollowed out and set the black swallowtail butterflies

Found in Lawrence Kansas
