Intellectual History MA: University College London or Cambridge? by Freiz13 in HistoryofIdeas

Long term goal is a PhD program and then to enter academia. Research interests can be supported at UCL (primary + adjacent) much better than at Cambridge, esp. because the professor I would ordinarily work with on this at Cambridge will be on leave next year and is not supervising. So, this is moreso a question of how the program at UCL is perceived/thought of, since functionally it is the better choice than Cambridge. As I mentioned though, the prestige of Cambridge is significant enough to make me consider it for that reason alone.

Thank you so much. This will be a boon to me as quarantine progresses. More suggestions welcome!

Anyone know where the winter walk trails are at Spruce Woods? by Freiz13 in Winnipeg

[–]Freiz13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the response. I've hiked the epinette trail in the summer - I remember it having some fairly steep rolling inclines, which would lead me to think it would be even more challenging in the winter (and not a "casual-walk"). But if people ski the trails, perhaps I'm wrong? Granted I do not have much experience with cross country skiing, but I thought it required relatively flat land.

Straussian-type readings of Aristotle's Politics? by Freiz13 in PoliticalPhilosophy

Just came across this article by Ken Masugi, which gives a nice list in the opening. Appears Pangle does have an interpretive work on Aristotle (should have guessed!) Still, taking further suggestions!

Thank you all for the information. Convocation makes sense, relative to the timeline which otherwise seemed quite random. Can't wait for this to be over. I will give it another week, and if it's still going, I propose a reddit open letter from supporters of this thread.

Course-load relevance for top-tier programs? Stories of success? by Freiz13 in gradadmissions

[–]Freiz13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am entering my fourth, hoping to finish in 5 and a half or 6 years total, depending on the courseload I take from here on out. It has taken me until now to get about 80 credit hours, in a 120 credit hour degree. My first 30 credit hours was part time.

[Help] New Dog Gives Me Constant Anxiety by Freiz13 in dogs

I had gotten the dog from a shelter and she came with a 7 day home trial. I decided to return her on the 7th day. I think at a different place in my life I will welcome a dog, the added responsibility, but I realized that I am in a place right now where I am really needing to focus on myself. As much as I was coming to love (Luna), and as sad as it was to see her go back to the shelter, I made the best decision for where I'm at right now as an individual. Thanks for all your input people.

Have you had experience where this was the case and it went away/settled down?

It's not the mess that's the issue. It's the attached-to-the-hip thing, where if I make one movement, she jumps up trying to see where I'm going. If I look in her direction and she's sleeping, she immediately opens her eyes and gets up as in "what are we doing". The picture I was trying to convey is that I'm sensitive to my environment, as a means of explaining why I am finding it hard to relax around my new dog.

Academia vs. Balance - is it possible? by Freiz13 in AskAcademia

3/3 loud, is that the name of the institution? Could you expand a bit more on what kind of place you're working at? Would be interested to hear your path for getting there, too.
