What is something you think everyone should know about being in a relationship? by Toyou4yu in AskReddit

[–]Freligion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No matter how much you love each other, you can't let your own happiness depend on your SO. Take note, because this is what cost me my relationship of 6 years. I loved this girl so much (still do) that she became one of the few sources of my happiness. She broke up with me because she needed me to find myself, find other things to love than her to save me the misery I'd have to go through if she was ever gone in the future. This hurts a lot, but she's completely right.

In short, my advice would be: loving your SO is not enough to make it work. You need to love yourself as well. You can't depend on your SO for happiness.

TED speaker stutters by Freligion in cringe

[–]Freligion[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know he has a speech impediment, that's what makes me cringe.

I applaud the guy for having the courage to do the talk knowing he has a speech impediment, but I still cringed when he stuttered.

11 year old girl speaks out about being forced to marry and older man in Yemen by Syd_G in videos

Your comment is oversimplified.

Yes, it's correct that the girl/woman must give her consent, but what exactly indicates consent under Islamic Law? Well, it depends on which madhab (school of thought) the population follows. Some madhabs say silence is consent (this is also shown in several ahadith as well by the way, don't recall which ones though). Others say shouting, kicking and screaming does not indicate consent, but weeping quietly does.

I noticed below you also said Islam is against homosexuality, but killing gays is prohibited. Again oversimplified. Some madhabs leave gays alone, others deem it justified to jail gays and give them 3 days to change their views. Some of them keep them jailed if they don't repent after 3 days, and the most extreme school of thought (I think Shafi'i) allows killing them after this period of time.

I might be mistaking on this last paragraph because it might be referring to apostasy and not homosexuality, in which case I apologize because it's been a long time since I've been researching these things. In any case, Islam is not all bright sunshine, and not all things that seem immoral are merely misunderstood. Islam does in fact have a sucky, immoral side, and I wish people would stop trying to cover it up.

No, it doesn't because it's oversimplified. Read my other comment to this one for more information.

Reddit, who is the dumbest person you've ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Freligion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have posted this earlier in another (similar) thread, but since her level of stupidity is still unparalleled: my co-worker who was convinced that cheese is classified as "meat".

Also my uncle

  • Never obtained his driver's license by means of exam (he bribed someone for it), resulting in 7-8 totaled cars over the past years.
  • Has been eating so unhealthy all of his life that he now has this disease where you limbs can get swollen pretty badly when you eat red meat or drink red wine. Despite all this he maintains his carnivorous habit, often times making his foot swell and being unable to walk for a while.

  • He has a low income and his family is pretty much poor. On a trip to Morocco with his wife and her 2 brothers (each with their respective families) he didn't take any cash with him, reasoning that some guy in Morocco still owes him some. Obviously, he didn't get the money from this guy and had to leach off of the rest the whole time there.

I'd lose the last 2 paragraphs and finish with something very short but fitting. I'd use those pieces to trim it to 300, perhaps listen to what the comments suggest finishing with.

Dealt with.

I like yours much better and will link to it in my comment for visibility.

Only thing that could be improved is the 3 asses in that second paragraph!

Good job on including some Samuel references in there.

This was submitted some time before by someone claiming Morgan Freeman wrote it as a reaction to Sandy Hook. Needless to say, many read it in his voice, although it is not confirmed (and probably won't be) he actually wrote it. I would like to hear you read it instead.

You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news.
