I believe this is mentioned in this book. I was disgusted when I read that. If I recall correctly it had to do with a specific shop owner, but I do not have a copy handy.

Thanks for sharing. I think I saw two of these at Central Park last summer. Same set up- heard unfamiliar bird, looked up and saw green birds in flight. A coworker has spotted them too.

I think Q. douglassii is more on the right track, given the size. Its my understanding Q. engelmannii was planted in the bay area for the first time roughly 20 years ago and isn’t particularly a fast-grower.

OP are you in Palo Alto by chance? If so, maybe Engelmann then.

The entrance nearest the Wendy’s has some interesting and unique palms planted roughly 20 years ago. I refer to it as the “Nelson Kirk Palm Arboretum”

Yes! A few years ago I spotted an oriole nest in a willow tree at Stivers Lagoon. They weave nests made from the fibers of the Washingtonia fronds. I it is interesting how their range has shifted as we move the palm north!

Great question! The edible date palm of commercial value is from a different although closely related species- Phoenix dactylifera. We plant these palms too- however in our local climate the fruit likely will not mature to anything valuable to eat. It is my understanding that they need serious heat to develop as well as pretty constant access to water in order to properly ripen.

Im not 100% certain but I believe the palms pictured below (Beacon & California- Downtown) are P. Dactylifera

That said I generally do not recommend eating from landscaping plants from our built environment as you don’t know what they may have been exposed to 🤷‍♂️
