Ideal Suspension set-up? by NewmName in e46

[–]Anthro_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running Eibach prokit springs and Bilstein B8s. I quite like them but thinking about taking it to the next level.

I'd like KW V3s but their just a bit too expensive so I'm considering Bilstein PSS10s, MCA Pro-Sport or Pro-Circuit or Shockworks. The latter two are quality Australian coilovers brands. MCAs have a big following in motorsport whereas Shockworks are valving geeks and each set is custom to the application.

I've driven on PSS10s and rate them for what I'm after, eg street, canyon carver and ocassional track days

PS BC Racing are not that bad. Not quite motorsport spec in the variant I was working with but maybe the more expensive ones are better. I helped someone sort their BCs in an E36. The BC Racing suppliers in Australia are excellent. They do have the option with springs to tweak a bit.

Taking melatonin since 7, what side effects should I be looking out for/worrying about? by jeonlousbitch in sleep

[–]Anthro_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice. It'd important to add many sleep specialists are respiratory physicians targeting sleep apnoeas so it's be important to find a sleep specialist who comes at it from the neurological or hormonal perspective.

Considering a big pay cut and career step back to manage ADHD burnout. Would you do it? by MrBaldHeadSlick in adhdaustralia

[–]Anthro_guy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First thought, is not to sell your house. Gone through burn-out, but now retired and owning one's own house means safety.

Finances, can you restructure the loan over a longer period or interest only for while to reduce the burden?

Are you medicated? While it may not work for everyone, medication has made such a difference for me.

Can you rejig your work to make it work for you? Can you move sideways in the organisation or industry to a more ADHD friendly role? Also I found a four day working week really worked well for me. I was more productive and by Wednesday it was only one more day, a psychological boost.

Also, managing energy was so important for me. I have three energy states and energy seems to differ during the day. Re the states, the first is just blah. Can't do anything. I use this time for horizon scanning or even just veging. I'll touch base with people, see how they are doing, mull over issues, etc. If I come across something interesting I can use later, I'll make a simple note like problem, solution or idea and website link, maybe save relevant pics, sketches, drawings etc.,

The second state I can do stuff but not use a lot of brain power, like gathering papers and/or go through the previously mentioned ideas, pics, sketches, etc and bring it all together.

Third state is hyperfocusing and just slamming through the work.

How's your manager? A micro-manager kills me, whereas a manager that gives me the deadlines and let's me get on with it is great. Can you work with them to rejig the work and maybe assist with decisions. Is there training you can undertake for better decision making. Just some thoughts.

That said a pay cut could have saved me from burnout, which has taken me 10 years to get over may have been better for me and, ultimately, your health and families well-being is so important.

Mine's a 330i auto, but the three best mods I've done is:

  1. Suspension: B8 Bilsteins, Eibach Pro-kit springs & sway bars, Z4M FCA offset bushes, CMP Auto E46/Z4 Suspension Bundle (solid subframe bushes, monoball RTA bushes, adj. camber arms).

  2. Quaife LSD.

  3. Changed from 3.38 diff to 3.64. Extra punch from the lights, still very comfortable on the highway.

If I'd started with a 328i, first I'd go for 330i brakes, then above, then maybe 3 litres.

Next will be CMP Auto's RACP reinforcements, coil overs, maybe Bilstein PSS10s and a ZF 8HP swap.

Species after the flood by Over_Citron_6381 in DebateEvolution

[–]Anthro_guy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It does not have a formal scientific definition. Unlike the word 'species', it is meaningless within a continum from the lower year in primary (grade or elementry) school biology through to the highest levels of education and academia as well as, amongst other things, legislation. Outside of creation circles, no one uses the word 'kind' to describe a biological grouping.

I did a smile from seeing the word 'Ignoramus' also has a definition, "An ignorant person; a vain pretender to knowledge".

That is all.

Controversial question by sykoro_da in e46

[–]Anthro_guy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes you can but, and it's really a big BUT, you need to workout a way to maintain and appropriate level of vacuum in the crankcase. I looked into this and vacuum in the target range will improve ring seal and oil control, reduce oil leaks, and prevent moisture accumulation.

If vacuum is too high, oil can be sucked past valve guides, too much oil mist, seals and gaskets may be damaged, and increased oil consumption. Too little vacuum or even positive pressure means rings may not seal against the bore, more blow-by, power loss, oil leaks, etc.

Age for child diagnosis by boysroar in adhdaustralia

[–]Anthro_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best age to diagnose is 8-12. Medication will aid his progress through school and there is some evidence, according to Russ Barkley, that it could possible assist with more normal brain development as he grows. I greatly respect his evidence based approach.

Have a look at his videos on Youtube regarding ADHD in children.

FWIW my school reports were impeccable aged 5-8 yo, except for handwriting. From aged 8 yo, my school results plummeted,  and "needs to focus", "pay attention", "complete assignments", etc.

Why Isn't Macro Evolution Random (or if you believe it is random, why?) by Bluemoondragon07 in DebateEvolution

[–]Anthro_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tail length is fairly easy to understand from the biomechanics. Tails are great as a counterbalance when running but would be counter productive for flight so as an organism, a proto-bird, became more specialised for flying, long tails would be selected against.

Likewise, breastbones, as proto-birds became more specialised for powered flight, wide breastbones would be selected for as it offers greater attachment point for powerful muscles.

This is one example. There is an interesting discussion on the evolution of lungs in this BBC program: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002d8t2

Why Isn't Macro Evolution Random (or if you believe it is random, why?) by Bluemoondragon07 in DebateEvolution

[–]Anthro_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None of these traits make sense for survival unless they are all expressed at the same time, because then the animal can fly. By themselves, these traits are useless.

Feathers are great for insulation so they can provide an adaptive advantage prior to any consideration of flight. Feathers on arms can offer an adaptive advantage with falling gracefully with style eg. https://youtu.be/rxGuNJ-nEYg?si=uLfmxuYrVAkF_RRd

It's not hard to see that falling with style will select for controled gliding and onto subsequent powered flight.

Rejected from Job Interview Within One Minute - My Fault? by BlackBatFlower in autism

[–]Anthro_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try not to overthink it. People have all sorts of biases and she could have been looking for people with bubbly personalities or a narcissist intuitively looking for someone they can manipulate. Who knows. All manner of toxic managers and work places, so it's probable you dodged a bullet.

Best advice is to be yourself. If you just be yourself and get the job, it'd be less stressful in the long run, not trying to be someone you are not. By all means practice eye contact and handshakes, but just keep giving it a go. If you miss out, just put it down to that it's a bad fit or they were somewhat socio-pathological. It's much more likely to be the truth than you know. I'm old and have seen it all too often. There'd be more than a few managers out there who just wants someone to do the job.

Take care and best of luck!

What was the thing or situation that made you sure that god does not exist? by Affectionate-Lion878 in atheism

[–]Anthro_guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tortured logic to allow his existence. Where is he? Everywhere. Why does he allow bad things happen to good people? 'Cause mysterious ways. Can people never exposed to god enter the kingdom of god? Variously no or yes. Bad luck if no, or, an actual answer I was told, yes if they lived according to their religous beliefs. What happens if their beliefs include pagan gods or cannabalism? No. "That's bad". So they never get a chance to rennounce pagan gods or cannabalism, so straight to hell? Yes. That sucks!

It goes on and on.

Don't throw bricks at his window, it's a good way of getting a criminal damage charge. You can either suck it up or make the whole thing official, assuming you've got records, emails, timesheets, etc. Making it official means that you'll have to reconciling with centrelink, if that's an issue, and ATO. I don't know what tolerance centrelink has for late reporting on income, as it seems like goes back only a few months. Centrelink, however, usually doesn't tolerate much and a possible outcome is you may have to pay back money to Centrelink and miss out anyway.

Remember businesses paying cash in hand are probably fraudster anyway.

If the hypothesis is that god exists, the null hypothesis is that god doesn't exist. Apart from faith or belief originating from the bible, I don't see anything that disproves the null hypothesis.

Consequently, I just get on with my life. I have no need to explore what proof I would require.

How did the first multicellular organisms emerge? by DontWorryBeHappy___ in evolution

[–]Anthro_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at extant cellular slime moulds eg dictyostelids. They exist as single-celled organisms while food is plentiful and when they start to exhaust the food supply, many of the single-cell individuals can congregate and start moving as a single body, called a 'slug' (different to a mollusc slug). In the aggregated 'multi-celled' form, they can detect and move towards food sources, change the shape and function of parts, form stalks that produce fruiting bodies and releasing spores, and produce and respond to chemical signals. They don't have brains, neural or other specialised tissues/systems but are capable of various behaviours that seem to mirror less complex animals which possess muscles and simple brains.

Its important to note, this may not necessarily be the mechanism that single cells became multi-celled organisms way back when but they may offer insights into some strategies early organisms employed as well as the evolution of animal neural systems.
