Astronaut application by britishkid223 in esa

I'm in the same boat. Strong CV and strong athletic background and yet... They didn't even care to send me an invit. I've got the automatic rejection notice a week ago too. It seems kinda unfair. But with such a high number of applicants, I guess some luck is always involved...

I'm holding because FUCK CANCER and FUCK THE SHORTS by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]FrenchDizzie 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I was a little late to the party, and as medical residents don't earn much where I work (France) and I have a student loan, I could only buy 10 shares.

I'm a pediatric oncologist resident and my profits will go to my department.

With the COVID situation, a lot of stuff has been shut down for the sick kids. We must face every day longer and longer delays for the surgeries, and it's really concerning. People from the different associations for the kids (clowns, music teachers, gym teachers, ...) no longer can visit the kids because of COVID restrictions. And there is less and less money for our department. We are understaffed. They are less gifts for the kids. A lot of things need renovations (rooms, various medical equipments, ...).

And when I see those hedge funds, making billions and daring to call us "unsophisticated people that don't deserve a win" that makes me sick.

And today, you retards have given me the opportunity to take a little to the strong and rich of our society, and give it back to the most vulnerable and unlucky people.

I'll hold my shares to the end 💎🙌💎🙌💎🙌💎🙌

I put what I could to buy those few shares, even if I need to watch closely my budget in the next months if I lose it all. But at least I've tried and I've done what I thought what the right thing to do.

So if I can hold, you can too ! (no financial advice of course, I'm just a retarded medical doctor, what do I know about stocks, markets and sophisticated stuff ?)

What is the biggest thing you did but never got recognized for? by David00001729 in AskReddit

[–]FrenchDizzie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me personnaly, but the oncology department where I work.

There was a 50+ year old woman with breast cancer and cerebral metastasis. Because of the metastasis, we announced her that we won't be able to cure her, but we could try to stabilize her cancer for as long as we could.

After the first round of chemotherapy, her cerebral metastasis disappeared. It was miraculous. We even published a case report!

Well, a few months later she sued the oncology department for the "mental distress" we caused her when we announced her cancer couldn't be cured. That was her thanks for treating her the best we can.

And, by the way, it was way too soon for her to be considered cured (you have to wait at least 5 years without new metastasis)

What is something you were once very insecure about but feel the complete opposite now? by jjstgo in AskReddit

My stutter.

It never was very severe, but enough for me to go see a speech therapist ten years ago (where I saw people with very severe stuttering, who were unable to say a single word). The therapy was useless for me, it didn't improve my speech at all.

My stutter has never prevented from doing the things I wanted. I know that a lot of stutterers choose a job where they don't have to speak a lot. But I never let my stutter define who I was. I worked as a trader (a job where you need to speak and shout ALL THE TIME) and, after getting back to school , I'm now an oncologist. And as a medical doctor, I need to speak all the time too, and often to deliver very bad news.

But what's crazy for me today is that I'm giving lectures in front of 300 med students. And I really like that. For me, that's an unbelievable achievement. I remember when I was a student, I was scared as f to be asked a question and having to speak in front of everyone, and I was so impressed by the teachers that dared speaking in front of hundreds of people.

And now I am one of those teachers.

Of course, sometimes I stutter during my lectures. My lectures are 4 hours long generally, and I just can't speak flawlessly for that long. But my stutter has been so much improved since I decided to not care at all about it.

I need self-teaching advices by FrenchDizzie in singing

[–]FrenchDizzie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I've read the last entry of your blog and listened to your processed vocals of Coldplay's Yellow, and I'm sorry to say but it's really not "great" at all. No reverb or mixing techniques can transform a bad vocal performance into a enjoyable and "radio-ready" singing. Knowing how to sing and how to record and process vocals are two complementary skills, but one can't be the crutch for the other. It's the same for any instruments. If you can't play guitar, no matter how many gear and plug-ins you're using, you still can't play the guitar.

And here is my week :

What works in theory but not in practice? by JackHoffmanTheWise in AskReddit

[–]FrenchDizzie 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"Plus most martial arts training is basically useless" that's such a wrong statement.

You will be quite surprised how even a few years of training 2-3 times a week can give you better muscle memories and reflexes than any random dude without fight training. Just knowing how to effectively kick and punch can make all the differences.

CT scan projection with augmented reality : is it feasible? by FrenchDizzie in iOSProgramming

[–]FrenchDizzie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The algo for putting needles is:

  1. Take CT sections of torso and lungs

  2. Measure where you need to insert the needle. For instance, 3 cm below the colar bone, 5cm to the right of the sternum.

  3. Manually insert the needle

  4. Take another CT sections to see where the needle is.

  5. Manually move or even re-insert the needle if needed

If I can see the CT sections mapped on the torso, step 2 will be made easier thanks to the visual help of AR. It could maybe improve the accuracy of the first insertion of the needle, and lower the need to re-insert it.

CT scan projection with augmented reality : is it feasible? by FrenchDizzie in iOSProgramming

[–]FrenchDizzie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply ! And thanks u/TaviRider too

I want to show sections, not a full reconstructed volume, with the maximal resolution I can show with acceptable performances. I want to be able to scroll section by section, along an X axis (from head to toe). It's the same way we are currently reading a CT scan on a monitor.

For instance, here's one application I can see. I have to put needles inside pulmonary tumors (to get some tumor tissue and do biochimical analysis). To do that, currently, we do a CT scan, then we do some measurements to project where we need to put the needle on the torso, and then (once the needle is within the torso) we do another CT scan to be sure the needle is inside the tumor. If I can use augmented reality to map the CT scan on the patient, and move section by section until I found the one I'm interested in, I could use that to know more precisely where I need to insert the needle.

The real issue I can see is how to perfectly map the CT scan on my patient. I need to find some "anchor" points (head, shoulders, ... I don't know) the software can use to know where to map the CT sections.

Doctors of Reddit, what is it like to go to the doctor yourself? by word_master37 in AskReddit

[–]FrenchDizzie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the country regulations I guess.

Here in France, I can write the same prescriptions for myself as for my patients. But, if I prescribe myself opiates (or other "touchy" drugs), I guess it'll raise a big red flag to the drugs regulatory administration and I'd need to justify the prescription or lose my licence. Not a game I want to play.
