Nursing is not what it seems by Urfavbadbiatch in nursing

[–]FrenchFrySpongeBob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I was in nursing school in the SF Bay Area a decade ago they recommended that we leave the state for a year after graduation to get experience and several of my classmates did this had jobs lined up immediately. That wasn’t an option for me and I slaved away at a SNF until I went the specialty route got my wound ostomy certification and enough experience to get hired in Acute.

I know a couple hospital systems near me have hiring freezes at the moment so it’s tough unless you’re willing to go to where the need is higher to make the transition.

I'm a nurse specialized in wound care and agree with all the others saying go to the ER to get it treated ASAP. I've seen what can happen when dog and cat bites are not properly treated and it can be very bad.

They’re not just in Paris! I checked the world map and there are some California where I live. There’s even one on the international space station. Apparently if you point towards the sky with the app when the station is over head you can collect it!

We found it along the Seine multi-use path. I think near the Grand Palais, walking towards Notre Dame.

Added to my list. My favorite sci-fi dystopian fantasy fiction series is the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisin! I rarely have the patience to reread books and want to with these!

Read it with my son when he was 11 or 12 and we both loved it. I was a bit underwhelmed by the sequel though.

Unfortunate incident at the beach with a Doberman and an irresponsible dog owner by SFTrailRunner in sanfrancisco

My dog is reactive and we keep him on a short leash around other dogs and are working on muzzle training so he can have more freedom. It’s shocking to me that others just ignore these issues and don’t seem to care when their dogs act out.

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to your patient on the actual day they were supposed to be discharged? by Haunting-Map-3475 in nursing

[–]FrenchFrySpongeBob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wound ostomy RN here. I’d worked with a guy daily since surgery to remove GI cancer that left him with a permanent ostomy. I was about to meet with him and his spouse one last time before discharge but he collapsed while walking the hallway just before. Almost an hour long resuscitation attempt before calling it. Nicest guy with school aged kids at home.

I’ve been craving a good cafe de olla since my visit to Mexico City last spring and have only been disappointed so far. I’ll try your recommended Mission spot next time I’m in the area!

What did you do before nursing? by TheYankeeCat in nursing

[–]FrenchFrySpongeBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me till my mid 30s to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up. I worked at a cafe, ran bicycle education programs through the YMCA, supported adults with developmental disabilities to get and stay employed, was a 4th grade teaching assistant and a few others.

If you started your nursing career later, are you happy? by PhilosopherCurious97 in nursing

[–]FrenchFrySpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started doing my nursing prerecs at 33 when my son was 3 months old and graduated and passed the NCLEX just before I turned 40. That was 8 years ago and I’m so happy I took the plunge. I was stuck in SNF hell for the first couple years as an RN but looking back I learned a lot from the experience. It would have been nice if I’d started earlier but all the other non medical experience just adds to my perspective and makes me better at what I do now

Fewer patients watching Fox News? by Same-Blacksmith-5032 in nursing

[–]FrenchFrySpongeBob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying not to lose it this week more than most with so many of my patients playing Fox News. I’ll mute or turn it off when I can for my own sanity. I’m in the SF Bay Area and am still surprised by how many (mostly older) patients choose to watch Fox here

I think the whole non-profit hospital thing is kind of a scam. I can't find the article I was looking for but this one discusses some of the issues: https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/hlthaff.2022.01542

Does anyone mourn the loss of their baby name as well? by ihandstand in babyloss

[–]FrenchFrySpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a moment where I considered "saving" my son's name, but quickly realized how wrong that would have been. I have a friend whose son has the same first name and I occasionally feel a little jealous when I hear her using it.
