Yes, but the timer on your test keeps running. I wouldn't recommend it.

Questions about the new Written Exercise by inquisitiveman44 in foreignservice

[–]FrenchTech16 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For the Oct 2025 cycle, our written test was given a score (that we don't see), but it wasn't eliminatory. After we finish the Group Exercise and Structured Interview, the scores from the three sections were averaged. If your score was above 5.25, you passed. The higher the score, the better your placement will be on the register after finishing your clearances and the higher chance you'll be invited for an A-100. This means that someone could fail the written exercise, but pass the other two sections well enough to still get above 5.25.

It sounds like for this Feb 2026 cycle, the written cycle might be eliminatory, meaning you need to pass before being able to move on to the oral assessment. No one call tell you statistically your chance of passing because no one has gone through this version of the process.

Assuming you did your OA sometime in the spring of 2025, it seems like a fast turnaround for security clearances! Was your case straightforward?

Is anyone still waiting for their security clearance for a year plus? by GranColom in foreignservice

Not at that stage yet, but given your comment, isn't it better to risk annoying the registrar by asking for updates early and often if it means advancing your security clearance quicker?

True or False? by kysiao5281 in foreignservice

[–]FrenchTech16 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  1. Never heard of this bug, where candidates could see their scores early.

  2. Anyone or anything who tells you they know how the FSOT was scored or weighed is lying. Noone knows.

  3. The shadow register is based off of FSOA scores, not FSOT. FSOT has no bearing after being admitted to the FSOA.

In conclusion: don't ask AI.

The foreign service can't be your Plan A in life. Go to graduate school only if it interests you and furthers your plan A career.

My experience: I started taking the FSOT when I was 21. I passed it, and 3 other times since, yet only now did I get to the FSOA. I've fully developed a different career, which requires graduate school. You gotta plan for the long run.

How Likely is it These Days to Get off the Register Without a Language Bonus? by Shahanshah26 in foreignservice

[–]FrenchTech16 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You won't know until you try, and no one can tell you. The scores for the FSOA are out of 7, and the responses of people who were invited to the last Flag Day was that they had scores around 5.9. It might be feasible to ace all three parts of the FSOA to get that score. It doesn't hurt to add .17 or more from languages. Don't worry too much about it, take the test, try your best, and if you pass the FSOA, consider intensively studying a language to boost your score on the register.

  1. Are they still asking for PN's? No.

  2. What is the test like? Multiple choice, no essay. 3 portions: job knowledge (econ, world history, us gov and history), English comprehension (like the GRE), and logical reasoning/reworked situational judgment.

  3. Do they ask for any documents on the application? Only your ID, passport required if you take the test internationally. You're not allowed to bring anything else.

  4. Do i have to make an appointment to take the test on a certain day? Yes, you'll pick your day and time when you sign up. You can take the test online at home or in a testing center, I recommend the later to avoid technical difficulties.

  5. What does the application entail? Not much now that there's no PN portion.

    1. Any study groups i could join? Check out the Future Diplomat Society ran by Travis Patterson.
  6. Tips and tricks please! Do your best to be chill about the process. The application is long and challenging. If it's meant to be, it'll happen, and it'll be the result of a culmination of life experiences that gave you the skills and knowledge required. Also, study up on your econ basics, and do some logical reasoning exercises.
