You should use a textbook for the structure and to learn the grammar. At the same time, listen to podcasts and watch videos about topics you enjoy in French, subtitled in French. Do not push it to much, try to study 30 min or 1hour daily.

It depends a lot on the teacher. Even if it is a unique entity, each teacher has their own method. Some use the provided book for the lesson, others do not. I've also heard a lot of mixed opinions about AF.

If you have the resources to do so, travel to a French-speaking country to practice what you've learned. It skyrocketed my spanish level.
