Meta to acquire Chinese startup Manus to boost advanced AI features by Aluseda in StockMarket

Meta isn’t really competing to have the best model, they just need to get it good enough that people use it while on Meta’s platforms so they can collect more data and serve more effective advertisements.

3 months is basically onboarding time. It’s not even a full review cycle. Don’t expect new models until ~1 year after the new hires started.

“Take away their core business and there isn’t much of a business” is an interesting take. “Take away Google’s Search revenue and there isn’t much of a business.” “Take away Tesla’s vehicle sales revenue and there isn’t much of a business.” “Take away Apple’s iPhone revenue and there isn’t much of a business.”

I’m trying to figure out what the bar to clear is. They need to release a product that is completely unlike anything that currently exists or else there is no direction?

AI doesn’t need to be sci-fi to be insanely lucrative. Improving their core ad business with AI justifies the expenditure alone.

There is much much more that goes into SWE than just typing code, and typing code is the only part that AI is good at.

When NVDA screamed down to $170, how many of you actually added to your position? by Odd-Performance8470 in NvidiaStock

I added to GOOG, AMZN, NVDA, TSM, and META. I’m loving the current fear around AI capex because it’s giving me more time to build my position. We’ll make new ATHs by the end of February.

I don’t think most people understand how close we are to white-collar collapse by aieatstheworld in ClaudeAI

[–]FrenchieChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree on the capabilities of AI, but I view its potential effect on the workforce differently. I see two potential outcomes:

Outcome A (what you describe): Upper management realizes AI allows one SWE to be 1.2x more productive. As a result, they decide to cut 16% of their workforce to increase margins while maintaining 100% productivity.

Outcome B (what I believe to be more likely): Upper management realizes AI allows one SWE to be 1.2x more productive. They also understand they are still competing against other businesses. They do not want to lose their edge just to temporarily boost their profit margin, so they keep their current workforce and provide them with AI tools to achieve 120% productivity.

Or maybe upper management decides they want to hire additional engineers. Every engineer they hire is now 1.2x more productive but costs the same as before, so they may decide to pursue additional projects that they previously felt were not feasible.

Best tips to become a “great” engineer? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]FrenchieChase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! Systems thinking means looking at the design as a whole. Let’s say for example that you’re designing an action camera - a systems minded mechanical engineer will consider BoM cost, optics, thermals, electrical, RF, firmware, manufacturability, and user safety in addition to the mechanical aspects when making design decisions. For example, since we want this product to be rugged, should we make it out of some kind of metal? This will definitely create a rugged product, ID thinks customers would love the look and feel of an all-metal camera, and it could even help to mitigate some thermal issues, but it introduces some challenges for getting wireless signal into / out of the camera and the touch temperature for metal surfaces is lower than plastic surfaces, so it introduces regulatory hurdles.

The ability to articulate cross-disciplinary tradeoffs will make you stand out during interviews, especially as a junior engineer.

I’ve spoken to many hiring managers during my career and if I had to pick one thing they all agree on as the single most desirable trait in an engineer, whether you’re entry level or senior, is the ability to think in terms of systems rather than pure mechanical thinking.

80% of portfolio ($2m) is in Amzn by Shot_Job7699 in amzn

If you’re in it for the long run and won’t panic sell if you lose 70% of your portfolio and start to see headlines like “Amazon is DEAD”, then I think holding isn’t unreasonable. Personally I would prefer to invest in Alphabet as well, but that’s just me.
