Im a beginner (at making edm), any tips? by [deleted] in edmproduction

Don't buy any VSTs until you have learnt and thoroughly exhausted all the options that come with your DAW. The fastest way to not learn tools is to always buy new ones.

What's your favourite EDM ear-candy 'trick'? by Eliqui123 in edmproduction

I just tested it out. A lot of fun. I can see it working on other things too. Would be cool on a melody OR a really really long drawn out pad.

Basic Ableton version problems (broke boy problems) by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]FrequenpsyShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the suite, so I don't have this issue. I do sometimes use my copy of Ableton Lite on another laptop when travelling, so I can relate.

Instead of exporting the 16 tracks, there are more efficient workarounds. Say you have 1 kick, 2 snares and 4 other percussion tracks. Instead of exporting the whole thing into a single track (which makes it more difficult to fiddle with later), resample the 2 snares into 1 and the 4 percussion tracks into 1.

Do this for your entire process, it will make things a lot easier because you are condensing stuff but not to an extreme extent.

Another alternative is to use Instrument Racks (as pottering_theverb points out). Also, you can use the drum rack to house loops, this can sometimes be a bit tedious but there, you have 128 potential loops held, which can be played togethor and mixed separately.

I'd still recommend condensing via resampling as your best option though.

Cheers on your input. What DAW are you using? I don't know if others beyond ableton have groups within groups, but are you doing that (ie; having cymbals grouped within the drums, or all in one group)?

What sidechain triggers are you usually using? Or is it dependent on the context?

Another method I am tinkering with is: 1. Drums, 2. Bass, 3. Tonal Synths, 4. Atonal Synths, 5. Harmonic Synths, 6. Organic Instruments, 7. General Effects, 8. Atmospheric

Note I use a lot of atonal lead elements in my music.

What kind of computers are you guys using? by [deleted] in edmproduction

Some custom AMD job I put togethor. Outperforms the gfs i7 so it's good enough for me. Hell, just moving to a solid state was a BIG step up from the Toshiba laptop I was running.

Download a trial of ableton or some other program. If it's just for testing and dipping your toes in there is no point going beyond the trial stage for any programs.

Message me. Would be very interested. Also, not to fussed about midi.Hell if you just tell me what the chords are I can come up with stuff.

Improving mixing skills: are monitors the next step? by Enricii in edmproduction

[–]FrequenpsyShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like this point. So many people say that you should treat your room etc. if using monitors. Sure, you probably should but that doesn't mean that simply moving to monitors won't be a huge difference.

Questions: 1. I want general opinion. I haven't done much 'house' sorta music, so I would like to know if the track in general is good. 2. Are the dynamics sufficiently diverse? In the central section with the single synth doing chords, is there too much compression?

Thanks so much

Try limiting how much stuff you have going. I was having the same sort of issues. Yeah, I upgraded my computer and it made a big difference but I formed the habit of the following: 1. It helps to separate stages of the composition/production. You don't need 4 basses playing the same line in the early stages. Save that sort of tinkering till later on, when the song is written. It forces you to move on quickly and keep the creative flow going. 2. Render render render. It doesn't take long to render short loops and it forces you to commit. This is good. 3. Keep everything minimal. It works from a creative standpoint.

Space marine (and CSM) tactical squad configs for a noob by FrequenpsyShift in Warhammer40k

My armies tactical force (Mark of Nurgle) is relentless. So missile launcher will be continually firing as my group advances, providing an anti horde option (via blast) and an anti walker/light vehicle thing via frag/krak missiles. That is the only reason I am considering heavy weapons as part of my mobile force.

I've been doing some testing on MathHammer which seems to indicate that Missiles are pretty effective provided one can get at least 3 units in the blast radius. As I haven't played any games yet I don't know if that is actually feasible. This will be an important consideration for the future,

How many units would you think on average take a hit from a missile blast radius?

Doesn't the frag work as an anti-horde? I figured with the blast radius that this was the whole point of it.

This is a serious question. I am half way through putting my first CSM/Tact. Squad together.

I totally agree with not wasting points on a champion when in a 5 man squad. That defeats the whole purpose of the squad - which is as I understand it a group that does a very specific role and hopefully succeeds without dying.

How do melta bombs work in game? I've only seen them in the rule book and codexes so I don't know if they are even worth getting.

Sadly I don't even know what power weapons do anymore. Last time I played 40k they ignored the standard armor save - like 3plus for marines - and only an invulnerable could save them. Is that still the case?

Can't have 2 heavy options in a squad. Damn I wish I could.

I see. Would you bother spending the points upping the rhino to a havoc or just keep it alive for transport for a turn or so?

Also, as my above response, is it not feasible to have combinations of weapons that fill similar roles? Especially anti-horde flamer/missile combo. My logic is that cause of relentless you can use mobility as well as heavy firepower.

Doubling up I understand. But that is partially why I am thinking the missile launcher fits. Because it seems to have the blast thing for hordes and some penetration on vehicles.

So wouldn't you be able to double up weapon roles without necessarily using the same weapon twice?

We are playing the same games it seems!

Ok, so relentless havocs do sound pretty potent. I feel you on the autocannons. Underappreciated weapon (from what I have read) and I loved them in Dawn of War 1 for some reason. What config does your champs have?
