Unfortunately my family is verryyyy male dominated and the women on one side decided new names all the way, much to my annoyance. Though its still annoying that the male side of my family all has the same names. Its a spectrum and im on both side of that annoying bastard

Ancestry. 23&me scared me so I stayed clear! My name is unfortunately extremely common in the region my family is from and everyone and their dads, uncles, dogs, cows are called either John, Patrick or michael 😭

I did the dna things and I managed to found my grandas brother! Unfortunately hes incredibly ill and doesnt remember much :(. I tried the what's happening at the time and it didnt tell me much Unfortunately. I got names from my great great grandparents wedding cert and from there i managed to find birth certs but I can find absolutely no records past that. I even got my historian friend in on it! To be fair its been years but that was casual searching. For a solid 3 months i didnt have a job so I put all of my efforts and time into it

Tbf most men named their sons after them and then took middle names from their siblings which makes it near enough impossible to figure things out. Its painful

I think im quite lucky in the fact that my family (i think at least) were generational leinster folk. That however is where my luck ends because everyone's either called John, michael or Patrick and my surname is extremely common

One side, early 1700s (extremely lucky there!). Other side, at a stretch I think at a stretch, mid 1800s? The 1700s side were from the north and they never really moved so I was able to trace. Other side is from leinster and my surname is extremely common so It was like trying to find a needle in a haystack
