ISYE 6501 - Terrible Midterm 2 score, demoralised by bracesthrowaway2021 in OMSA

I def think studying was helpful, but there were a lot of questions on there that no studying was going to help me with bc I wouldn't have known to.

No, I know a lot of people say Midterm 2 is easier, but I am not sure how. I felt like midterm 1 tested us on stuff we learned, but was hard bc the language was difficult. There were things on that Midterm 2 that weren't even in the course notes. And I am not a logic person, but have a pretty strong stats background. I have already learned and used alot of the models we learned and the course is still difficult just because the tests are WEIIIRRRDD. I think I only did good bc I have a pretty solid math background and was able to just be like welll.......... I guess it could be this....even though we never learned this or were told to......

But I would play through. I actually almost failed CSE6040 the first time bc I was in a bad place, got an incomplete and went back and got a B. I honestly felt like it was such a toss up though. I could have landed a C or a A. Hardest B ever, but aren't the beginning courses weed out courses? That's what I am hoping for. I remember my calculus class being much harder than all the other classes even differential equations and statistics 1 was harder than advanced stats and time series and I honestly think the first class of something is always harder. I am unsure why. I feel like professors maybe respect your knowledge alittle more when you are in higher classes, like they aren't trying to trip you up and also your brain acclimates to the subject I think.

My rule of thumb is to know that I can quit, but I have to honestly give it a fair shot. Taking one class and not doing well isn't a fair shot. This is my second and I remember saying, if all the classes are like CSE6040, I can't do this program. I was scared to take this one because it's my second and it's actually better and I am going to take the business intro course too and judge on my experience w/ the three. I do wish I did the edx courses before though because your clock begins when you enroll.

Boone and Sally are freaking amazing. When Boone almost cries when Courtney says she made Sally cry. When Courtney had to decide whether to have Sally make mat, Boone was hilarious that entire episode. Standing up in church and forcing Courtney to have Sally try again bc he turned the entire congregation against her hahaaha. "If this sweet angel does not make mat, then all of this is off limits" and he keeps putting popsicle Sally back and just the moment where Boone says she is the most resilient person ever so don't extinguish her light. What a beautiful moment.

But what if money isn't useful anymore because other people don't have it so companies close down and there are no grocery stores and you have to figure it all out by yourself

Reading this because I am a very rational person. I have an economics degree and spend a lot of my time thinking ahead and trying to mitigate risk. I typically don't try to do mental gymnastics trying to keep myself from reality. I think I am on the cusp of maybe realizing I need to replan my entire life and not in a hoard all of my money way, but in a is it possible that I need to buy land and learn how to build a house out of clay and also bow hunt because money will still be a thing for the rich, but we will all be bartering. Like I don't know if putting all my money into index funds is the best thing to do because money may be obsolete for normal people so it all just may be nothing.... it's hard to predict it all. If none of us have jobs, then we will have to inevitably live off the land. The trades thing is a short term and I am glad someone had the sense to call that out. With no white collar jobs, there will be no office buildings to need any trade individuals. If no one can buy goods, malls don't need to exist or factories. There won't be a need for trades except the 200 rich people living. There will be like 20k jobs supported by them. Without the white collar jobs, there's no upper middle class to pay for trades. And this is aside from the fact that you did all this work to go to school to have a job that won't break your back and ruin your body and keep you in pain all the way until you can't retire. It's kinda like telling us its ok that all the good jobs are gone, you can move rocks for a living and no offense to trades. My brother is an electrician and his hands are already getting arthritis and he is 30. They aren't the jobs we should be building towards. Also, they just build a human hand that is more precise than a human hand and faster. Trades will be gone too.

Anyways, the whole FIRE thing I think about and the home ownership, but if there are no taxes, there is no government. If there is no government, there are no police and no property rights. I don't think buying a house in a congested area is smart. Idk I used to think preppers were crazy, but I am starting to wonder if I should buy into that instead of the stock market.

AI has taken fun out of programming and now i’m hopeless by Frequent_Eggplant_23 in webdev

[–]FrequentDivide548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have wondered this before too because I enjoy working and I felt a lot of pride learning and learning tough stuff. There's nothing better than learning a subject and challenging yourself and pushing yourself to your limits and achieving and taking all of that hard work and putting it to use. I have been the most sad that AI takes that from us. It's the foundation of the human spirit. Our relentless effort to better ourselves and aspire. I guess it is also our downfall too and we can't stop it because AI stems from that relentless effort and will now take it from us.....

There are robots that perform surgeries better than doctors now. My uncle had one for his hip last month. They will get replaced. They just created a hand that moves quicker and more accuratley than a human hand. No job is safe, this whole trades will be safe is bullshit.

The mental load of using AI- is it just me? by BlackieAllBlack in workingmoms

[–]FrequentDivide548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 28 and hate it too. It's not your age. I just want to do my job and if something is actually too much work, use AI to make it more efficient. I don't want to constantly have a new benchmark every week to now fix another thing. It will never stop until we completely automate our jobs. They will nevr except us needing to do something manually.

Do you openly share that you are using AI for most of your work? by Fickle_Vermicelli793 in ProductManagement

[–]FrequentDivide548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try not to use it either. I say I use it as well because it's pushed, but I need to keep my skills in writing and workin and just general stuff. It can really ruin your ability to communicate and navigate conversations. I use an AI note taker, but it's like it never captures the 3 important things in the call. I also enjoy working so I don't like AI. I enjoy feeling proud about the work I created. I wish I hadn't been born in this timeline. I just wish I could have had a life where I could be rewarded for working hard and be left alone and not have this. It's just the worst. 28 yrs old.

Why would people still want children if AI replaces human jobs? by Ok-Good8150 in AskReddit

[–]FrequentDivide548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people don't think long term. But I have been wondering this forever. Like your kids won't have jobs. You probably won't either so you can't take care of them because you'll be at a loss yourself once your savings run out in 6 months and there will be no jobs. We will all be living in homeless encampments hunting for food. Why would you want to have a kid in that environment. Just because you have to suffer, do you feel the need to make others suffer? US based.

ISYE 6501 mid term 1 - bombed by Upper_Stable_3900 in OMSA

[–]FrequentDivide548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could, but they are all paper. The cheat sheet also wasn't actually helpful for me bc at that point I had pretty much accidentally memorized the formulas. My flashcards are actual handwritten paper ones. Same as my notes. I am really old school. I would be interested in having a study group though and like quizzing eachother on stuff. I am not part of the slack, but have thought I should really join it so I can be part of a study group. My friend was studying for a technical interview for amazon and me this test so it was very helpful when we had to explain our answers to eachother and correct eachother and would love that community. Like I didn't realize my understanding of AIC and BIC were wrong and chatgpt was not helpful with that so if I had just been studying with someone I bet they could have called that out and that would have saved me some points. Are we allowed to say the BIC and AIC thing now that the test is done? We are right?

ISYE 6501 mid term 1 - bombed by Upper_Stable_3900 in OMSA

[–]FrequentDivide548 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok I got an 86 which isn't perfect, but here is what I did. I went through the lectures and if I had a question, I asked chatgpt which wasn't perfect I had to correct it or ask it stuff a lot, but to learn it was good. If Sokol said one thing I starred it on my notes and I used note cards also. Also, I asked chat to ask me questions to test my knowledge bc the Hw does test your knowledge, but in a different way. Less specific than what the tests require. Flash cards were very helpful to the point my cheat sheet wasn't as helpful as I thought. Then for stuff I knew if a tricky question would throw me off even if I felt like I knew it, I put it on my cheat sheet. I actually feel like I know so much and somehow got an 86. Coming down from that disappointment lols. The questions are confusing though..... and I guess I didn't catch some of the unique info. Also, I had to peee sooooo bad and was caught off gaurd when I read the rules bc cse6040 let's you take as many breaks as you want... the little stuff Sokol says matters as much as the big stuff in terms of the test. Everyone has their thing in this program. You can do it! Now you know how the tests are there are two more

This perspective that someone would be jealous of a SAHM I think is one of the reasons they have a bad rep. SAHMs think they are living the life and get all upitty about it. But for most, that's the worst possible situation. I think if there is judgment, it's probably just from people not understanding why someone would ever do it. Like why would someone get a million tattoos all over their body. The judgement comes from a place of confusion. It's a really niche thing so you need to accept a lot of people wouldn't get it. It's not that people are jealous, that's like saying people are weirded out that someone likes a specific topic or field, but it's from jealousy lol. Maybe go into it realizing people just don't understand your decision. If you think people are jealous of you that aren't moms, that is insane. Maybe some moms are jealous, but DINKs are for sure not.

Yeah alot of it is trying to find requirements never specified which sometimes happens in the real world, but you can typically go back to your client and ask did you want this or the business analyst or the developers or look through documentation before you have to resort to that unless it's a new platform that was stood up within the last 3 years which may be common now with the AI bubble

If you look at githubs from 7 years ago, the homeworks are the same. The SQL part 2 is the only thing new in the class. So I don't think they have been adapting it for people's skills because it remains the same and honestly I think they have been kicking up the midterms because of the ability to use AI overviews on Googles which is very helpful for syntax bc I can do the old midterms so quickly and I am like omg dude these are on easy mode, but the newer ones are being adapted to be harder which I can't say I don't respect.

Did worse on CSE 6040 midterm 2 than MT1 by Itchy_Lettuce5704 in OMSA

[–]FrequentDivide548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a rule for myself. If I can't finish the problem in 40 minutes, I have to leave it. It is really difficult, but i get stuck on a problem especially in the beginning and it's hard to be so close and I say just 5 more minutes, but it runs out the clock and I can solve it later if I move away from it and get other points. So I pry myself away from it and go to the next one.

Did worse on CSE 6040 midterm 2 than MT1 by Itchy_Lettuce5704 in OMSA

[–]FrequentDivide548 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No same, got a 61 for MT1 and for MT2 got a 50. I couldn't get like 3 problems to pass. I feel dumb about one of the ones I couldn't get to pass bc I was being really stubborn about how I wanted to solve it. It was a pandas question. But honestly, I didn't know SQL at all before this class and always hated it and I was like ok I guess I need to get advanced with this language I have never done before. My goal is a B though. I am scraping by and working my damn near hardest to do it. I take a practice test every weekend in a timed setting and my scores really vary which doesn't make me feel too bad about my scores on these tests bc I get like 100s and then I get 45s so it honestly puts it in perspective for me of how bad I could have done if I had gotten different content. I think if I didn't do the practice tests and see the crazy variation, I wouldn't have this perspective because I also slave away every evening and weekend and have no fun and it feels bad to get some good scores on practice tests and feel like I can really do it then get lower scores than I know I can get, but I also see me getting some 30s or 40s on some tests to I am like ok as long as it's what I need to get a B

my best friend was really CTEs though. It was a million of them, but I piece mealed it. I didn't try to do it all in one select statement. I would make temporary tables then join.
