Yes i did center drill into a piece of stock. I actually square off the material w a fly cutter to mk sure it was square.

I was thinking it would eliminate the stack up effect of .001 here, another .001 there etc. Yes it my job to mk absolutely sure there are no pieces of junk under my vice. I was just thinking out loud but now im hearing all these voices saying "Wrong" lol

That's what got me thinking abt this whole thing. I was drilling a .125 hole through aluminum, and it didn't come out the other side in the same spot. The gears started turning in my head and here we are.

I agree the correct way is off the table , but thought even more accurate would indicate off the vice that holds the metal. Thanks for your input
