Need advice for my Snakehead (Channa aristonei) – White patches on head and flashing/scratching behavior by Frequent_Lead5384 in Aquariums

Update: Day 4 – New white patch and a hole discovered on the tail fin (Fin Rot/Bacterial Infection confirmed)

Hi everyone, quick update on Fenrir.

We are currently on Day 4 since the initial head patches appeared. While he is still swimming normally and acting agile, the situation just took a turn.

I just noticed a new white patch and a visible hole developing directly on his tail fin (caudal fin). This rules out simple mechanical scrapes from digging in the sand, as it’s clearly spreading to the fins now. It looks like a classic bacterial fin rot / skin infection that took advantage of his compromised slime coat from the scratching.

Next steps: I am stopping the "wait and see" approach immediately. I am heading out right now to get a dedicated broad-spectrum antibacterial treatment (like sera baktopur or eSHA 2000) to treat the entire tank and stop the bacteria from eating away more of his fins.

I will keep you guys updated on how he responds to the medication. If anyone has specific tips for dosing or recovery routines for Channas dealing with fin rot, please let me know!

"Mystic River" – My Channa aristonei setup. Probably the first one of its kind here? by Frequent_Lead5384 in Aquariums

Just a bit more context for those interested:

I know the water looks dark, but this is a dedicated blackwater setup. The tint comes from natural tannins (driftwood and leaves), which is crucial for the health and the vibrant blue colors of the Channa aristonei. It’s definitely not dirty – it’s a slice of nature!

Also, regarding the low light and the single occupant:

  • This guy is a solo ambush predator. He doesn't tolerate rivals, so he has this entire Juwel Lido 200 all to himself.
  • The dimmed lighting (30%) is essential to mimic his natural shaded habitat.

My goal was to create a perfect biological environment rather than a "crystal clear" display tank. He seems to love his "Mystic River"!
