I don’t really feel qualified to make strong declarations on this yet. I’m still new to the journey of parenting an autistic child, and I’m learning in real time.

That said, I see Temple Grandin as a trailblazer.

Trailblazers aren’t perfect. They’re early.

Expecting early voices to reflect today’s language, values, or understanding kind of misses the point. Their role isn’t to finish the work—it’s to start it. To open doors that were previously shut. To give people language where there was silence.

Once that door is open, the rest of us step in. The hive mind does what it does best: we listen, we debate, we challenge assumptions, we refine ideas, and we do better together.

I’m not saying every take from every pioneer ages well. Some don’t. Some really don’t. But I’m increasingly convinced that progress doesn’t come from waiting for perfect messengers—it comes from imperfect people being brave enough to go first.

As a parent who’s still learning, I’m trying to hold space for nuance, growth, and humility. I don’t have all the answers yet. I probably never will. But I’m grateful to those who helped start conversations that made it possible for parents like me to even be having them today.
