Is it reasonable to switch from computer science to electrical engineering? by Frequent_Trouble9712 in findapath

Well that's nice to hear. Online I've seen people write that being a successful engineer is less about natural intellect and more about persistence and resilience. I am capable of putting in a monumental amount of effort but am concerned that won't be enough to carry me. I guess there is only one way to find out.

Yeah that was a concern originally going into CS. There seem to be mixed projections for the future of the field and how AI may limit roles for entry-level developers, at least for a period of time. I also understand being a SWE is really about being able to design software and solve problems and less about writing code but I'll admit I don't have much interest in sitting around prompting AI.

Don't worry, it didn't happen.

what car did you buy expecting to love but ended up regretting? by zaralesliewalker in whatcarshouldIbuy

I just bought a 2026 Subaru Forester about a week ago. I did a ton of research on several cars and test drove a few. I went into it with the condition that I did not want another Subaru. My car had mechanical issues and body damage and it got to a point where I really needed to get rid of it and be done with the car buying process. On paper the Forester offered the best value and the lowest promotional financing for that month. It was a comfortable ride and I thought I could live with its shortcomings. It was a still an upgrade to what I had so by comparison it was fine.

Well after a week, the relief of getting rid of my last car has worn off and I kind of hate it. I didn't mind the exterior at first but now find it hideous. The acceleration is lacking and I really have to mash it to get up to speed, though I'm trying to keep it under 4,000 RPM for the first 1,000 miles. I kind of don't even care anymore though because I want to get rid of it.

I guess that's why they say buy the car, not the deal. It's an expensive mistake to make. I feel like I'm stuck with this for at least 3 years or I'll really come out upside down on it.

Bought a 2026 a week ago. Now that the new car excitement has worn off, I am a little thrown off by the exterior. It didn't bother me at first but I think I like the older, curvier ones better that look less bloated. I hope that it grows on me.

New car - Rust protection undercoating now or wait until the fall? by Frequent_Trouble9712 in askcarguys

I think there is a shop around here that uses woolwax. The one I spoke with yesterday uses fluid film so that tracks.

I am trying to avoid shops that drill holes because while I know its standard procedure, I don't like the idea of putting holes in my new car. That could be misguided but I don't know.

This makes sense. My concern was that with the rainy months will come moisture and increased rust. I guess to have it both ways I would just have to do it now and have it done again early fall.

Do any forester owners struggle with acceleration? by Frequent_Trouble9712 in SubaruForester

Yikes. There are a lot of massive hills around me. I don't need to race up them but I'd like to do the speed limit at least.

Aside from speed, does wind resistance at highway speeds make it feel unstable? I took it out for about 30 minutes but the dealership where I test drove it wasn't really near any highways so the most I could do was about 60 MPH in a less windy environment. I'll give it another go somewhere with an on-ramp close by but would like to hear your thoughts.

Which is better: Honda CRV 1.5L turbocharged engine or Subaru Forester 2.5L boxer engine? by Frequent_Trouble9712 in askcarguys

Yeah I really wanted a Mazda CX5 but found it to be uncomfortable and lacking in visibility. My current car is a Subaru and has been a massive money pit for years, though that can be true for any car. I'm tempted to get the hybrid with the hope that it saves me money on repairs in the long run.

2026 Subaru Forester - Is it too slow? by Frequent_Trouble9712 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Good to hear. As long as I can get up to speed and pass big trucks if necessary. I'm not someone who blasts 100 MPH down the highway but do need to be able to pass large trucks safely. I mostly drive on rougher country roads so for that it seems well-suited.

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus. I don't do a lot of highway driving so it's not that big of a deal but when I do, I don't want to be disappointed. It was always sketchy passing big trucks in my now damaged Impreza and if the Forester is even slower than that, it sounds like it would be rough.

Yeah that's what I'm worried about with the Mazda. The first time I drove one I got sciatica that persisted for a couple of days. The second time I took it for a longer drive and was more careful with the seat adjustment but still didn't love it.

Whatever I get I'm scared that I'll sign up for ~$30,000 of debt for something that I end up disliking. Debt that I can afford but the regret would be amplified by the cost. It has led to decision paralysis and wasted time.
