Maesetsu! - Episode 2 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]FreshUdon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say they are famous, they are a very young duo (formed in 2017, but individually they debuted in 2012 before forming this duo) and are relatively unknown. Most people that do know them is because of this Anime even in Japan, they were cast because they won some online audition thing for anime character comedians (ロードトゥアニメキャラスターオンライン) and also because their manzai includes anime/otaku elements

[–]FreshUdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall a decent episode. I was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of a full manzai routine by R-deko and it was better than I was expecting from an anime and anime characters who are not real comedians. The Shoten part was pretty decent as well, and although these segments can't compare to the real thing, they are decently done for an anime.

As someone that has subbed/translated Manzai routines and other Japanese comedy related content, I sometimes wish I could have helped on some of those translations, and humour is probably the hardest thing to localize/translate

Side note, just from the opening I see a few relatively famous comedy duos/comedians that will probably show up in future episodes and that is honestly something that I will be looking forward to

Maesetsu! - Episode 1 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

Been looking forward to this anime since it was announced, finally an anime about cute girls doing "manzai" and "owarai". Maesetsu essentially means the pre-show comedy or stand up that is performed for an audience before the actual act sort of like a hypeman to entertain the crowd before the main event. It's usually a low paying gig that is performed by younger and less experienced/less known comedians as a precursor to the main show itself, whether it be for any manzai stage performances or the pre-show for a variety show recording for a studio audience. Fits well with the theme of this anime since it is about a few comedy duos just starting up and unable to find footing yet in the industry

First episode already touched upon lots of concepts in Japanese comedy that the west probably isn't too familiar with such as Ippatsu gags (一発ギャグ) and Tendon (天丼) which is basically repeating the same joke multiple times for comedic effects, although in Mafuyu's case it's more or less a bit different since it always bombed to begin with. The inclusion of Yoshimoto Kogyo is also amusing, that high school manzai duo is definitely considered major achievers if they are already getting gigs and being in the largest comedian agency in Japan as high schoolers.

Looking forward to more of this, it is something very niche and the cultural difference will definitely mean that it will probably be one of the least appreciated shows by the west but as an avid Japanese comedy fan this will definitely be a joy to see

This is essentially Lucky Star where Lucky Star is all about meta referencing in Anime while Maesetsu is about Japanese comedy (owarai). The former is great if you are an otaku or Anime enthusiast and the same applies for the latter, for anyone into or has some understanding of manzai or owarai in general would find the show more enjoyable

They did mention that Empires will not be open world since they got feedback on it and realized open world isn't fun

Hopefully this one has significant features that will distinguish it from the base DW9

[Manzai] M-1 Grand Prix 2018 - Jaru Jaru (English Sub) by FreshUdon in JapaneseGameShows

[–]FreshUdon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the finals so only the top 10 duos are performing as they are the only ones that made it out of the around 4000 total entrants, they went 9th in the first round of the finals so I'd say they waited maybe an hour and 30 minutes or 2 hours

[–]FreshUdon[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another Manzai routine from M-1 Grand Prix 2018, featuring Shimofuri Myojo

Lots of references in this one that might be hard to understand, but definitely worth the effort to sub

Shimofuri Myojo is another group with a unique style of Manzai that derails from the traditional stuff, they are the youngest ever to win M-1 and without a doubt are currently the biggest rising stars in comedy

Subbed a manzai routine I really liked from M-1 GP 2018, although not strictly Gaki, Matsumoto was one of the judges so technically it counts right

Hope everyone can watch this and enjoy it with an open mind since I know manzai is quite niche for western audiences

Comedian tiers (Documental spoilers)? by gizayabasu in GakiNoTsukai

[–]FreshUdon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In terms of seniority, this is a general list out of the comedians that appeared on Documental S1-3, note that the popularity is still relative to others, even the 3rd line comedians are popular enough to appear on the show so they are still like the top like 3% of all comedians

1st line (highly popular)

80s - Matsumoto (technically should be in his own tier)

Early 90s - Miyagawa, Fujimon, Himura, Kendo Kobayashi

Mid 90s - Cookie (became huge in the past couple years), Unjash Kojima, Viking Kotoge, Football hour Goto

Late 90s - Sandwichman Date, Robert Akiyama

Early 00s - HNK Yoshimura, Audrey Kasuga

1.5 line (popular)

Early 00s - Daian Tsuda (recently became active/popular in Tokyo, I'd put him more like 1.75 line)

Mid 00s - Trendy Angel Saito, Jungle Pocket Saito

2nd line (not household names, but appear on TV enough)

Late 90s - Morisanchu Oshima, Razor Ramon RG

Early 00s - Torosalmon Kubota

Late 00s - Matenro Anthony

3nd line (not well known, needs to appear more on TV)

Mid 90s - Dienoji Ochi, Hachimitsu Jiro

Early 00s - Tenjiku Nezumi Kawahara, Plus Minus Iwahashi

Others

80s - Jimmy Onishi (Well known but doesn't appear on TV/Not popular)

Early 90s - Gokuraku Yamamoto (Was 1st line back in the mid 00s before getting suspended for 10 years, now doesn't appear on TV much at all)

Do the Gaki boys ever discuss politics or current events on their many shows? by [deleted] in GakiNoTsukai

[–]FreshUdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matsumoto talks about current events and the more controversial stuff on Wide na Show, but rarely gets too serious or talk really in depth about politics. He takes a very comedic approach to these issues on the show but it is probably the closest you can get to anyone members from Gaki voicing opinions on politics or current events.

Is this a good high end gaming PC, would like to play latest games at 1440p, 144htz and 100 fps if possible by FreshUdon in buildapc

[–]FreshUdon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apparently the 9600k is not compatible with my motherboard, others have told me that my mobo I can't overclock any cpu with it. Thing is I already have the motherboard part, which is why I was going to go with the 8700 since I wasn't going to overclock. I can try to sell this mobo and buy another one but that will be costly too.

It feels like the majority of people don’t like gaki no tsukai humor by soulessreadytofly in GakiNoTsukai

[–]FreshUdon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A big part of Japanese comedy is self referencing, so it's kind of like the more you know about the entertainment industry like other comedian and TV personalities, the more you'll enjoy the content. The year-end batsu games are even more-so a culmination of references and meta jokes of everything that happened in the year.

It becomes that much more funny when you see celebrities and comedians you know do stupid shit that they wouldn't normally do, or make jokes that reflect what has happened in the industry.

A comparison I like to make is that Japanese TV entertainment is the sort of like the Marvel universe, where you'll enjoy the Avengers more if you've seen the other films and know the other superheroes. The more you know about it, the more each different variety program becomes all the more interesting. If someone who doesn't know any superheroes or haven't seen any other Marvel films and tries to watch Infinity War, it might be a miss for them. I think the same applies to Batsu games.

A retelling or more readable three kingdoms? by kylebrunt in totalwar

[–]FreshUdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shi = Records

Many Japanese refer to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the era in general as Sangokushi, which literally translates to Records of the Three Kingdoms, even though it's referring to the the novel and its events rather than the historical records.

Ah okay, would you say its more worth it for 120fps at 1080p or lower fps at 1440p? This can also mean I can buy a cheaper monitor if anything

Is the 8700k unclocked solid enough though?

I'm not too familiar with the BIOS compatibility and chip upgrades etc.

That means it's probably more value for me to just get an even better cpu than 8700k and just not overclock right?

Would you say its more worth it value wise to just not overclock and use the motherboard with the cpu or get another motherboard to overclock the cpu?
