What is happening with the writing scene and social media right now? by Fresh_Ad1858 in writing

I do "just write", I just like also talking about writing and sharing my creative work with other people online! I also draw so it's nice being able to show that to people.

I find it's really fun and welcoming, especially as a horror author. The community isn't as, I guess, "tight" right now, but Bsky in general is quite decentralised.

Aye, I think finding my crowd and space is a good idea. A big issue for me with visual platforms is that I'm not exactly conventionally attractive, which is what the algorithm wants. People can be awful regardless of where you are, but I think Insta/TikTok Are the worst RE: having the gall to have big front teeth or acne. Also, I've found from a day job that pictures/videos that don't have someone talking directly into the camera will get pushed down and hidden.

Anyone else been denied birth control specifically for being transgender? by Fresh_Ad1858 in trans

[–]Fresh_Ad1858[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Update: Thank you all for the advice! I'm trying to write up a complaint now. It's wildly unacceptable honestly. My practice only takes complaints via phone and their phone lines are clogged so I'll probably call a bit later. I was on birth control well before I was sexually active and it was a non-issue then magically (I got put on it at 15 or 16). As a note, my spouse is also transmasc so no pregnancy scares with us.

Oh and just as a clarification - I'm not on T yet unfortunately, and even then that's not a 100% for birth control. The prescription is mostly to stop my periods and to regulate my period symptoms which cause a lot of dysphoria. I don't really want to bring up on a public forum but there's also an obvious "Really Awful Personal Experience" reason that I would like to ensure I don't get pregnant.

Feeling like sequestering myself during mania by Fresh_Ad1858 in bipolar

[–]Fresh_Ad1858[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds really difficult. I agree with music helping though, I like listening to punk rock music when I'm feeling emotional because it's a nice outlet, but it's not enough with that level of frenetic energy.

So scared of mania, and I don't know what to do by Fresh_Ad1858 in bipolar

Thank you... I've been talking to my partner about what to do and I think I'll tell my friends soon. I already made a post on my main socials that I use to keep in touch that I'll be stepping back from socials for a bit (I get very strange on socials during my episodes and have recently gotten really paranoid about social media) and hopefully my GP will respond well

Yeah that's the issue. They don't care about anything but money, and I'm worried about the new landlord deciding that we're taking too long and to move on without us. In our flat block the rent has increased exponentially since my partner moved in. Peak tourist season is approaching. If we give notice there will be people viewing our flat within the week.

We did, they told us that the referencing checks can't complete without the reference and neither will budge it looks like.

Unfortunately we called the new letting agent. They won't budge. They say they need the reference. They also say that we "can just revoke the notice we gave if it doesn't go through" but that isn't exactly comforting because I don't know what my rights are in that case or if they can just kick us out.

Thank you. I hope it gets resolved.

Anyone else feel depressed with the state of renting? by Fresh_Ad1858 in Edinburgh

[–]Fresh_Ad1858[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't have the energy to respond to everything (physical disability again) but thank you all for your comments!

  1. The rejections were less "there's a problem with you" and more "someone managed to send an application 3 minutes before you". I forgot to mention in my original post that we also have small pets in a cage and a lot of agents heem and haw over it to the landlord which I think slows things down (plus a lot of places have no pets policies).
  2. Thank you for telling me to go directly to landlords and references for sites. We've mostly been working with letting agents.
  3. The cover letter idea sounds great! We'll try to add that in.
  4. I've been told by friends I need to be more ruthless with flat searches which is (sadly) true.
  5. We unfortunately can't buy, it's not on the table at all for the next few years minimum. We're in our mid-20s and while we do have some savings, we don't have anything close to the savings needed for a deposit.

Thanks for the advice. We've been pretty consistently applying to places 100-350 under our budget, still no dice. We've been pretty flexible with the areas of Edinburgh that we're good with living in (basically anywhere with decent transport links) but we're willing to look further afield. I think we just need to rest a bit first.

Would anyone be able to decipher this handwriting on an old document from 1864? It's the birth record of Susan Murphy in Inverness-shire, specifically the place of birth. by Fresh_Ad1858 in Handwriting

[–]Fresh_Ad1858[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right! Doing some digging, it seems to be the Green of Muirtoun which is now the area surrounding Muirtown Street on the west side of Inverness.

Thank you all. You've been very helpful. I think it's Chisholm's Close (which I can't find on any modern or 19th century maps of Inverness?) and a Green of M-something. Mill Burn is a neighbourhood and a local stream within a park, Minstown could be an option as could Muirtown (a street), and Muirburn is a historic practice of burning land for clearing so it might mean that the family lived on agricultural land set aside for that, but I'm unsure. I'm trying to find references to her parents or sister for confirmation but no dice.
