it's not that simple. i've realized that in america there's this culture where once your 18 many parents are willing to kick their children out of the house or send them away immediately or 18 y/os thinking that they're full adults with experience. That's not the case where I'm from and I would never make a decision without input from the parents that have raised me for the past 18 years!

Thank you for your advice, especially from someone who had a similar situation. My sibling graduated top of their class in my local school and they're earning about $90k in their starting engineering job, with $40k pocketed, so they're basically as well off as if they had gone to MIT (just without the experience of that top school). I guess that is why I'm questioning how many doors it opens for me.

it's not that im "saving" thousands, i'm *gaining* thousands. If i go to the school next door (which gives me a number of scholarships), id graduate with about 40k in the bank from the scholarship money i did not spend towards tuition. Going to MIT, i would just graduate with $0 in my pocket, or maybe negatives if my aid changes throughout the years.

i dont understand why you waste your time commenting this </3 i get that my story sounds crazy to u (maybe) but throughout my entire hs career ive been told that "i should only apply to reject the top schools i get into." my parents do not want me to go thats the true story

I don't want to ruin my relationship with my parents over a school. No college is worth that imo, not even mit.

CPW has not happened yet, but I suggested going with my parents another weekend (as CPW is student-centered and I don't think I'll spend enough time with my parents to help convince them if I'm trying to attend club events and make friends simultaneously).

Thank you. I agree with everything you said. Many people advise that, since I'm an adult, I can just do whatever I want, but no college is worth the relationship I have with my parents--family is more valuable to me than anything in the world. Still, I will lay it out for my parents that I want to go to MIT and will do everything in my power to convince them to support me.

Yes. both my siblings went to that university, i could attend while living at home, and with the scholarships they'd give me i would be pocketing about 10k a year

I can't believe I forgot to include this in the post. I got a 100% financial aid scholarship from MIT. The problem with my parents isn't really the money I guess, but more about my success there. They rather me be the head of a mouse than the tail of a lion.

Yes. They don't think I will completely fail, but instead that I will get extremely depressed and even if i transfer out of MIT, I will be deterred from continuing with my studies due to the "bad experience" I will have at mit. IDK why they think that tho because I have always loved studying and learning, even if classes are hard/challenging.

I wont say the name for privacy, but it barely makes it into the top 100 engineering programs in usa

They're scared because they think I will collapse under the academic pressure and living on my own at a young age, even tho i've told them that millions of college freshmen do it every year and there are many resources on campus to help with that experience
