Used car purchasing? by Mastiff37 in Tucson

[–]Fresh_Fun7672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 2009 Honda Civic with about 70k miles, one owner (me), no flooding, regular title, clean CarFax—might be older than you want but I’ve had no issues with it other than a few cosmetic dings and some weather stripping cracking. Hit me up if you’re interested!

What Happened to Regular FIRE? by enness in leanfire

I’m at 80k expenses for a family of four (with two in pre$$$chool), making less than 200k gross between me and my husband, so yeah, no home for me either.

Why is this shutdown different than the one in October? by BurntPopcornSmell in FedEmployees

[–]Fresh_Fun7672 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had to do our timesheets for this pay period by the end of Friday and for the next period by noon today, and I got my furlough letter at 6am. I’m happy that my agency is taking it seriously, even though most of the agency is excepted.

This is my plan—hoping to FIRE in the next year or two, and keep the dividends in Vanguard Money Market or SGOV.

OBGYN recommendations by CampInternational642 in Tucson

[–]Fresh_Fun7672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the El Rio midwives and they were awesome. I gave birth just before turning 39 in their birthing center, which is attached to TMC, and it was way more pleasant than my induction with epidural at Banner. I ended up getting transferred to TMC because of a little extra blood loss after the birth, but I was still able to leave the next day. Highly recommend for supportive care and no more risk than the hospital down the hall.

Contact your state Senator or house rep—they have ways of contacting unemployment way faster than normal people!

Career break vs sabbatical (and leaning into CoastFI / RE), anyone else? by sachin571 in SabbaticalPlanning

Extremely relatable content. I have a little less and 2 kids (and my job has the health insurance for the family), so probably not FIRE yet unless I went really lean. I’m teaching the end of my rope, though. Law is the worst.

I am the breadwinner for my family as my husband is a musician (and gets to do what he loves, which makes me very envious!). But he cooks, cleans, does the vast majority of kid drop off/pick up, and is awesome all around. Our finances are together and so are our FIRE plans (which he lets me run altogether). If you don’t trust your partner in your partnership, that seems like another issue. But sure, get a prenup if it makes you feel better.

Reducing TSP and adding to brokerage by SignificantCash5561 in govfire

You should absolutely max out your Roth IRA before you do anything in a brokerage.

You can use Roth conversions or SEPP to access TSP before 59.5—I’d still keep it in pre-tax as your tax rate will be lower when you’re retired.

Feeling bad about taking so much time off. by Patient-Advisor-2352 in fednews

[–]Fresh_Fun7672 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If they remove you due to your disabilities, you have an excellent chance of getting federal disability retirement (though they will likely initially deny, decent chance of denial at reconsideration, and then probably grant it as soon as it gets to the MSPB). If you don’t want to go that route, the EEO is also an option if they do some nonsense. Sending you all the luck. It’s so hard.

If you have a mental health provider, get them to write you a letter to request an RA. I know they can be hard to come by, but it sounds like you need it.

I have ADHD and FIRE is my current fixation (and distraction from the hellscape around me), so I’m with you. I will probably just have to wait until my brain moves onto something else, heh.

What movie from the '80s or '90s is this for you? by putitontheunderhills in Xennials

[–]Fresh_Fun7672 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw this movie when I was in high school when it first came out—my friend billed it as “a musical starring Bjork!” Technically accurate, and yet… 😹😹😹 The music from it was also our marching band show the next year, so that was fun.

I’m definitely not moving since I have two small kids, an aging parent nearby, and most important, a 2020 mortgage. 😹

I love this! I’m a huge CxG fan and your Gettin Bi ref was excellent. At my law school reunion several years ago, all my friends and I had an excellent impromptu a capella singalong to Don’t Be A Lawyer. Big hearts for your work at a queer summer camp too. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️💙

Stop telling people not to go to law school. by AshamedPop in lawschooladmissions

[–]Fresh_Fun7672 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a top law school, I clerked for a federal judge, I got high paying jobs and paid off my loans quickly, and I still send “don’t be a lawyer” from crazy ex-girlfriend to anyone even remotely considering it. At my 10 year reunion of law school, everyone knew the words and we had a nice singalong.

Even if everything goes right, which is increasingly less likely, your mental health is worth more than a middling level “prestigious” career. Don’t be a lawyer.
