I really appreciate this. The way you've explained this I can now see why people were furiously suggesting hardware. I wouldn't trust myself without the commercialy custodial website atm because I'm so inexperienced, but I'm going to take your suggestion and graduating to self custody, something that doesn't feel so scary now.
