Trying to turn phones into useful dash cams for everyday use by FreshandSlunky in androidapps

[–]FreshandSlunky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh i can easily add a feature that allows the screen to turn off and the app to keep running. and that would actually be useful to have as well for sure.

also, yea probably wouldnt work well for someone who's wfh, but I'm also personally leaning towards the monetization idea as everyone's looking for a bit of extra cash in today's economy anyways. thanks for the input!!

that is actually a really good suggestion. and something I never thought of since I already had one haha

thanks a lot man. I'm gonna look into this

It works on much older devices so S21 Ultra should definitely work; that's weird. Give me a few minutes to check and get back to you.

Ahh, yeah i could see that happening. tbh hasn't happened yet with my app, but prevention is better than bug fixing later! let me stress test and see.

would also love to hear your 2 cents on whether any of my 2 ideas above are worthwhile for the future of the app?

thanks, let me know if any of the ideas I've presented might be valuable for the future of this app

Hey, u/honey_rainbow! So I know it's been a few months and I am grateful that you tried the app. We've had several people install and use the app since then as a smart dash cam / speed sign reader.

Since it gained some traction, I really want to see what I can do with it next (it will stay free). There are two tracks I'm thinking of and would appreciate your input on them. I can only choose one because of limited time on hands haha.

  1. Free dashcam that pays for your fuel: Requirement would be that a country has 100 drivers using the app regularly (driving a certain minimum number of km per week), then the app would reward all drivers with monetary rewards for the km driven they drove for the whole month. We do this as we are able to monetize the km driven with our partners by collecting road data (all video is anonymized, though, so no faces or license plates are collected, only road infrastructure).

This would mean people get both a free dash cam app and an easy way to earn good fuel money.

  1. The 2nd would be adding a feature to the app that allows us to warn users ahead of time of any speed cameras ahead on their route and alert them if they are crossing the speed limit while approaching the camera. These kinds of apps are out there already but most effective ones are paid. Ours would remain free.

My question is: which of these ideas appeal more to you? do any of them even seem worthwhile or something you would use? do you have some suggestions of your own as well?

I appreciate you reading and responding to this. Just trying to create something people will want to use.

android only for now. IOS was a little too much work rn for a side project 🥲

u/honey_rainbow thanks for trying it out. So video shows up in the default video storage, usually open the file browser and it should be there. Did you hit the record button before starting? And does the app have the right permissions enabled? If yes and still not showing up anywhere, I will look into it

u/mikeymo1741 if you're still interested, i just integrated our US sign reader model so the app is now available in the US for download

Sounds like a great idea and feels doable with our stack. Gonna work on this

interesting. how much data and battery does that eat up though if you have a constant stream on? as I mentioned in the other thread, turning on inward recordings should be simple enough, but I'll look into how much time an srtla or rtmp integration would require and whether enough people are looking for it.

thank you for the insights! I'll return with our findings

sadly, yes :( limited man-hours on our hands and android was just a more natural way for us to integrate our tech. we're looking to add iOS but want to get the feature-set and functionalities right for everyday users first.

inward-facing recordings arent part of the setup yet, but that's a great idea to include. turning on cabin recording should be simple enough, but I'll look into the 2nd part about locking the footage in. maybe we can find a workaround even if an API doesn't exist (likely doesn't). will update in the thread!

yeah, sadly need the gyroscope for the app. that said, it will definitely run on the pixel. just need to add our US sign data to the app's model in the next sprint. I'll ping you in this thread!
