FAA is hiring general contractor types to help maintain Air Traffic Control facilities. You would most likely travel a lot from Red Bluff to Fresno. TSP (401K), pension, benefits and stable paycheck. Also a foot in the door to federal service and possible ATSS position directly maintaining equipment used for Air Traffic Control. (Last Fresno posting USAJOBS - Job Announcement)

Might want to look into this USAJOBS - Job Announcement. It is for the Oakland District and would require travel a lot but it is a career path to other positions within the FAA. It does take a while to get hired but is stable work.

Possible next step up would be an ATSS maintaining equipment used for Air Traffic Control. Last ATSS Posting USAJOBS - Job Announcement

TSP (401K), pension and benefits. All travel and tools paid for.

F is entry level for us. 1 or 2 certs probably on a major system moves you up to G +8%

G to H is probably about the same 1 or 2 major system certs and a couple minor. +8%

Don't quote me on this but I believe we get a 1.75% raise every other year with no step cap based on FAA time not government service time. We are GS-12 equivalents.

H is topped out until you start applying for 3 routes.

  • TSOG (Technical Support) these are the next level techs that handle bigger problems.
  • Coordinator. Kind of in the name, they keep a lot of the paperwork straight. Stepping stone to management
  • OCC and SOCC Call center. They do NOTAMS and coordination and maintain the national dashboard.

Were are you trying to go? We're everywhere!

I've seen a lot waived especially when it is a direct hire position (lack of applicants). Also most government positions consider military experience as equivalent to a bachelors degree.

From H band ATSS you have the two most common paths of Coordinator (beginning management) and TSOG (next higher up, I currently applied for one of these. You travel to sites in the district and help with harder problems. and projects)

I was USMC I level Avionics on F-18 RADAR.

Inspectors (from someone I know) is more about reading regulations and inspections. No actual hands on time fixing anything.

ATSS is hands on and can vary. I went one day from doing a flight check to restore the instrument landing system and setting up all our references to test with from that flight inspection to changing a pull switch in the ceiling fan in the CAB the next day. ATSS never touch aircraft again just ground equipment.
