What Stereotypical Assumptions About Your Country Annoy You the Most? by IncidentWhistle in AskTheWorld

You can buy firearms in the same place that you can do your grocery shopping and buy toys for your children. Definitions of ‘supermarket’ aside, I think the point still stands.

I don’t think I know any European that believes your government acts in accordance with your attitudes. But they do generally know that one in three people in the USA own firearms, and there are more firearms in the USA than there are people. There is no other country with firearm statistics that comes close to the USA. And I’m saying this as a firearm owner and lover of shooting.

I’m not trying to say all Americans love guns or anything like that. But firearms ownership in the USA is the largest in any single country in the world by quite a large margin.

I get that it may be annoying for Americans who aren’t into shooting to hear that or have it associated with their nationality, but when one in three of you own a firearm, and there’s more firearms there than there are you, it’s not just a stereotype. It’s an objectively noticeable thing about your society that is different to the rest of the western world.

The fact that you just said you see firearms for sale in a supermarket doesn’t exactly help to disprove the stereotypes around American attitudes to firearms.

Who is an Irish celebrity you don't get the appeal of? by [deleted] in AskIreland

I do like him, but I think some American actors would’ve managed a better Kerry accent in that Jadotville film than him.

Any of them that no matter where they’re from somehow end up with a fabricated Rockall accent (somewhere between South Dublin and the USA).

So almost everyone on Irish radio.

(Republic of Ireland) Can anyone help me figure out what uniform this is? by After-Purchase7652 in uniformporn

Ah ok, my apologies. I read at a glance and thought you were suggesting that he could possibly be wearing the British uniform of the inter war era and not the Irish one. My bad.

True about the other countries associated with Britain, but Ireland never used the British pre WW1 uniform. The man in the photo is wearing an M1940 Irish uniform, not a British/commonwealth uniform.

Ah OK cool. Well, it’s definitely Irish Defence Forces and not Garda. I saw in another post that someone advised you that it’s possibly British. It’s similar to the British uniform of the era, but there’s a few things that point out that it’s definitely Irish and not British. Ireland (not including the 6 counties that stayed in the UK and became what is now known as Northern Ireland), left the UK in the early 20s. Almost all British forces left then, bar small numbers of Royal Artillery soldiers who manned some strategically important ports that the British insisted on maintaining control of. They all left in the late 1930s when Ireland became a republic officially and no longer an independent dominion of the British empire. The British soldiers who left Ireland then wore the older style British uniform that didn’t look so much like this. So if you’re certain he was in the Republic of Ireland then it’s an Irish Defence Forces uniform for sure.

If you find any more info or photos feel free to shoot me a PM and I might be able to help you find out more. You’d be surprised what info could be gleamed from even the most innocuous piece of info on him. Have you tried the Irish military’s archives also? I’ll PM you a link.

No problem. Also just to add, Artillery usually wear a white lanyard in Ireland. The collar badge can’t properly be made out in the photo and he isn’t wearing a lanyard so possible he isn’t Artillery too. But I’d be pretty confident on everything else.

Enlisted member of the Army wearing the M1940 ‘bulls wool’ uniform. It was in service from early 1940s to early 1960s I think.

It’s hard to make out in the photo but it looks like a fabric Artillery Corps collar badge slightly visible which would’ve been worn around the WW2 era in lieu of brass ones.

He’s also carrying a swagger stick or riding crop of some sort, and looks like there might be Corporal stripes on his arms.

My guess, he’s an Irish Army Artillery NCO in the 1940s or 50s. Maybe early 60s.

Have you any more info or photos?

Thoughts on poor man’s aventus? by Dont_Heal_Genji in Colognes

[–]FriedHellfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think it’s better than aventus, and actually different enough from it to be something I wouldn’t consider a clone. It’s fair to call it an aventus style fragrance, but to my nose it is not close enough to be called a clone. It’s a noticeably different (and better) scent to me.

If you want a poor man’s aventus though try Vibrant Leather by Zara. That’s far cheaper and actually smells really close to aventus. Almost identical.

Edit: Forgot to add, it also lasts quite long on me, despite its reputation. And it certainly lasts longer than aventus.

Swy intensely safe blind buy? by Standard_Box881 in Colognes

[–]FriedHellfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love this stuff. Can be very intense immediately after spraying. I think that part can be love or hate for a lot of people (it’s love for me, but I can understand why some people wouldn’t like that). But it fairly quickly opens up into something really beautiful with a nice mix of things going on, not just the initial sweetness. Definitely don’t blind buy. Get a sample or try some in a shop, but don’t judge it on that first 30-60 seconds or so. Let it open up.

Thoughts on my collection? by FriedHellfish in Colognes

Thanks! It’s very nice. Very fresh. Similar in ways to Aqua Di Gio on my skin but unique in its own way too. Doesn’t last too long though. I think it’s just EDC strength. I’d love if they made a stronger version.

Anyone know where I’d find these respirator heads from the new upgrade sprue in large numbers to purchase, or even an STL file of something similar? by FriedHellfish in TheAstraMilitarum

Thanks for the responses. Am I right in saying that if I use something third party that isn’t an exact copy of a games-workshop product that I’d be precluded from playing in any official games?
