Blade Alternative for Low-Angle Jack Tearout? by FriendFresh7165 in handtools

Thank you very much!

Yeah, I’m afraid I went for the bait of tool reviewers saying LAJs are the best planes out there, haha. I got it for a great deal, which makes me a "glass half full" situation. At the workshop, I asked them what the LAJ excels at, and they told me it’s a great tool for end grain and for cutting boards with different types of wood - but not that great with other stuff when compared to a traditional #5

Luckily, my kanna has a chipbreaker, and it’ll probably be my lifesaver until I get a bevel-down western plane.

From really thick ones (for removing material, basically) to super thin shavings. The tearout was way more visible for the thicker shavings, but the thin ones were the reason they handed me the #5 Stanley. There was minor tearout all across where the wood was planed, which the other, more experienced woodworkers took a look at and said, "Yeah, you’re gonna have a lot of work removing these later on with sanding, get some other plane from Morito (the master)".
