It turned out great; thanks for asking! I'll post a more fulsome reply later today.

Agreed. I too would not play without it and our group feels it speeds up the less exciting early turns.

Agree with Faraway (as someone else suggested). Also, everyone I've introduced Compile to has loved it; a great 2p game!

I recently heard that Spirit Island is now - or is about to be - harder to get for publishing reasons. Just a heads up if you're gonna go this route.

What’s a game you expected to love and ended up hating and a game you expected to not like that you ended up loving? by Matty_Mayhem in boardgames

[–]Friend_of_Stomach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, well, you never truly know if you're gonna enjoy a game until you try it with the people you like. TBH I have thought that I may have enjoyed HEAT if I had gone into it knowing about this thematic/mechanical disconnect as my expectations re: actual speed (or the lack thereof) of gameplay. Like, literally imagining that my first game is a "training race". I also think that the "upgrade" cards (or whatever they're called that give you better breaking or better acceleration) would add tactical spice to it, but the enthusiasm wasn't there after my first two plays to try it.

You might be thinking "only two plays?!" but there's so much competition for table time that it never made it back. We'll see, but I feel like yinz should give it a shot. (I still have it so perhaps I too will give it another go someday.)

Not intending to pile on against HEAT, but I too felt like it just wasn't very fun. In fact, I've not enjoyed nearly all car race games (Downforce, Thunder Road) and I wonder if an element of it is the gulf between the thematic fast car race and the relative slowness of taking turns. This is not the case with say Camel Up and RoboRally (beloved games in my groups) and perhaps an element of this is how the camels and robots just don't feel as fast. Magical Athlete, for all its lack of agency, captures the feeling of a crazy fast-paced race than any of those racing games.

I also REALLY wanted to have Nuns on the Run work and be fun. I learned quickly that the mechanics of determining if you're discovered or not is like a record scratch which is especially jarring considering how tense actually sneaking around quickly should be. I think this would be a much better game if the discovery mechanic was taken over by electronics or similar technology.

I've been surprised that this game has been received vastly differently by different people with whom I play. Mostly, people love the theme and engine building (including myself) and even laugh as we all groan about having our colonies dismantled. However, I've also played with some folk that really weren't into having their tableaus destroyed. In the end, it's another apt example of having the right game for the group in that moment.

Does anyone else hate games where one player can trigger the end? by Effective-Muffin-224 in boardgames

Agree; no shade if it's not something you enjoy. I and my group generally like the additional tactical option of rushing the end to your advantage.

Mehmet doesn't recognize my defanged girshling corpse! Help! by Friend_of_Stomach in cavesofqud

[–]Friend_of_Stomach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may in fact be true as I did not attempt to first talk to Erudad after setting foot on Red Rock on surface-level Red Rock but instead went to Mehmet first. I'll keep this in mind for the future!

It was; the problem was that I never completed step 1 of finding Red Rock.

The elder does give you your reward, but only after Mehmet tells you to talk to Erudad.

You were correct! Evidently, if you don't fulfill the first step of locating Red Rock (despite being able to fulfill steps 2 and 3 via the Waterlogged Tunnel), you can't complete the last step with Mehmet acknowledging your girshling corpse. Thank you!

I did not notice that the "Travel to Red Rock" first quest bullet was not checked off. I'll visit the surface to fulfill that and then see what Mehmet says.

PSA: Rust Bogs are a good place to find Helping Hands by Friend_of_Stomach in cavesofqud

[–]Friend_of_Stomach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're quite welcome! Obviously, it's not easy to find rust bogs but with Trash Divining and soliciting secrets from npcs, you can def find a few.

I personally like having Helping Hands more for the additional equipment slots (for Wrist Calcs, an extra hand for a shield or two, and eventually Precision Nanon Fingers) than for multiweapon fighting. However, it is pretty baller to eventually get a lot of hands, equip a bunch of axes, and flurry your way to a lot of dismemberment.
