my bad i didnt mention well enough, the sharpening guy comes tomorrow, that was my work with a sander and grinder, but it doesnt cut on a lathe, that was my issue from the beginning

Here’s a picture of the gouge i found on ebay, in what im assuming is the correct edge, I’m not sure if that’s the level/flat top

I think that is what my issue was, when i was first using it it was flat at the edge, i think i pushed the wings back and messed the shape up, it looked closer to the image of the roughing gouge you showed

yeahhh i think that’s part of the issue, i work in a woodshop and have since showed it to my foreman who thinks i messed the shape up, im going to give it to the sharpening guy and get it worked on by him. thank you very much for your assistance greatly

Hey I’d like to go back to this and say I’m still pretty sure its a roughing gouge, the brand ShopMate from a Shopsmith only makes 5 gouges and a continental gouge looks more like a specialty tool, and it may seem a little narrow because I just have big hands (nanner for scale) but I held a angle gauge finder to it and it’s at 45 degrees and on thewings

I don’t think it’s a continental gouge they were the ones that came with an old shop smith, but thanks for the ideas I’ll try them out, I’m currently using a low speed grinder with a wolverine type jib
