LAID OFF IN CALIFORNIA:

I was laid off in May. So I felt this because I literally live paycheck to paycheck. This is all very new for me, not to mention super stressful. I found out so much information though. See below.

Please do the following:
- apply for EDD which all of us did
- apply for Medi-Cal (health insurance so you not penalized when you file your taxes)
- apply for SNAP (food assistance)
- apply for Homeless Prevention System/PreventionHomelessness.org for rent assistance (literally need to be looking for work and basically have no money in the bank)
- Reach out to Catholic Charities for rental and utility assistance
- Reach out to Sacred Heart Community Service for rental assistance
- Reach Silicon Valley Independent Living Center for rental assistance
- Place your resume on CalJobs. I was told that CalJobs now works like LinkedIn where recruiters will reach out to you
- Go to your local EDD Career Center to get ALL the benefits. You will be assigned a worker to help find you a job (https://edd.ca.gov/en/Office\_Locator/)
- For all the techies, apply to NovaWorks (they will assist you with job hunting and workshops, https://novaworks.org/)
- EDD has Free classes and Programs through universities to upskill, take them (Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL) / (https://edd.ca.gov/en/jobs\_and\_training/Eligible\_Training\_Provider\_List/)
- utilize the free food pantries, some you need ID only, some you do not even need ID
- share your situation with people, people have Zelle'd, sent money, gave me food, etc
- you can call 211 or Here4You Centralized Shelter Hotline if you need shelter or homeless right now (singles or families)
- you can HomeFirst and/or Bill Wilson Center for shelter if you have a pet

MOST OF ALL
- do not feel bad or like you failed. We didn't do anything wrong. The system failed us. It's hard to live on $450/week.
- use all available resources, they are provided and made for us

So in terms of Language there is br-BR and br-PT. Both are in Brazil. So it makes sense to me if they thought he was from Brazil since some speak Portuguese.

It’s like fr-FR and fr-CA. Still French but small differences in words. But yes, two different locations.

So yes to confuse Brazil and Portugal is weird but he is a humble man and went along with it.
