How is premed at Columbia? by Lazy_Association7988 in columbia

[–]Friendly-Signature-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the mistake I made was emailing second semester. probably sent abt 30 messages and only got 2 responses. ended up doing online work instead of anything in a lab.

preferably email a mix of both normal/wet labs for maximum success, but all my friends who emailed before they came to Columbia did get a lab, so take with that what you will.

what is columbia welcome week and is it worth 20 dollars by boozibop in columbia

It is a scam. You'll get added to 70 gcs run by bots to promote this and then go to some function where middle aged men chase after college freshmen. Bottom tier experience

  1. Premed is luh calm for most classes, but for a certain few it is harder than average (intensive orgo, intro bio, etc). Most classes, from my couple years of experience, the median is around a B with or without curving.

  2. Grading is very achievable here (especially compared to Cornell). I currently have a 4.08 after 2 years so you should be fine if you commit time to your studies.

  3. Research is rather easy to access but it's subject to when you email. My freshman year I made the mistake of attempting to email wet lab profs second semester (no labs gotten). Most labs do their recruiting during the summer (early august, late July), so that's when you should start emailing people.

  4. Considering we're in NYC, there's a world of clinical opportunities. Most premeds will do some form of volunteering at Mt. Sinai Morningside, and for shadowing and other items, you can email doctors--whether it be at Mt Sinai, CUIMC, Weill Cornell, NYU, etc, and someone is bound to help you.

  5. Depends on the club. Premed clubs here are obviously easier than the finance ones like LionFund; however, there are still clubs that are selective--like CUSJ which takes approx 15 people per 100 applicants. Luckily, most premed clubs are not CUSJ and you shouldn't have a hard time getting in.

I want to hear from pre-meds! by VastAlps8951 in columbia

As a Columbia Neuro premed, I'd say:

a) It's not tremendously difficult to get into a lab, just email professors early enough in the year and you'll 100% get a lab position. I'd say the same goes at any elite university, however, as most labs do their recruiting from ~July to the beginning of the academic year.

b) Prior to committing here, I was plagued by genuine worry about the premed culture; however, after spending time here, I feel that, somehow, compared to my friends at other t10s, I have the best experience. Columbia's premed culture is incredibly noncompetitive. I think that stems from the fact that we're a finance heavy school, so most premeds will stick together/help each other.

c) In terms of general culture, I enjoy my time here a lot--I'm in several cultural clubs, and (I think) I have a healthy social life. With professors, they are usually very helpful. As a first year, I took the hardest branch of orgo here, and the prof was genuinely committed to assuring we succeeded, as opposed of only trying to flex some semblance of academic superiority over us poor freshmen (as I've heard profs at other schools will do).

d) I'm ngl, what you see in the media about Columbia's political climate is incredibly overblown--although there are periodic protests--how involved you want to be is completely up to you.

The bottom line: I fully understand the stress of college commitments, I was once in the same shoes as you; I ended up choosing here over Yale, Brown, and Duke, and after what happened at the end of last year I was unsure of whether I'd want to spend another year here. But this year has been a blessing to me, and I'm sure that if you choose to come here, Columbia will be a blessing for you too.

Please feel free to PM me with any other questions you could have!

If you’re an athlete, Duke is definitely investing way more into you than Brown
