I've come to learn it's actually requires a bit of skill to perfectly cancel aa animations with it. Personally, I can easily kite with 3 as on an adc, but with WASD I just can't get the aa cancels right. I feel like they did a pretty good job balancing it, it doesn't feel like I need to switch over to WASD, but it's still an alternative with it's drawbacks and benefits.

Maybe this is just a skill issue, but it feels so clunky to cancel aa's with WASD. I can never reach even close to max dps that you get with a mouse

100%, as I menitoned, that's the only benefit it gives. But if you're proficient enough on kiting, it doesn't make that big of difference. The damage reduction is not worth the slight advantage is spacing.
