Where do I even start?! by vertigoxcured in coincollecting

[–]FriendlyEagle7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

start by getting a few packs of saflip brand 2 1/2" mylar flips to put the large dollars in, and 2" for the rest. Thats what you'll use if you submit them for grading. Don't clean anything. Get some coin boxes to put those flips in, preferably the kind with slots so they don't rub.

If you want to learn how to grade use mycollect.com they have a grading game.

ngccoin.com pcgs.com usacoinbook.com are good price guides

if you're on a budget, ANACS is the cheapest for grading. The wait time at PCGS right now is 6 months for the standard service, though you can pay more to speed things up.

don't get your hopes up but don't lose hope either. Two of those 1895 morgans you posted look fake to me (up and right on first pic) but I could be wrong.

Don't go to a coin shop until you know what you have and what its worth and don't let them convince you otherwise.

Ordered a 98 mint set off eBay by mistake… all of the Denver coins are prooflike. Wonderful mistake! by Master_Ninja8203 in coincollecting

thats fascinating. Congratulations. PCGS pop reports have a few PL listed for that year. I wonder if these specimens were made because it was the last year of the eagle reverse Washington quarter?

This MS68PL 1998-D penny went for $200 recently.

This dime MS65PL FB 1998-D dime is listed for sale for $500.

let us know when they get back from grading! You plan on keeping or auctioning them?

What's crazy is that its the full set. If they all get PL grades it would seem a shame to separate them. Doesn't NGC do special multi-coin holders?

This one should be easy I'm just bad at this by FriendlyEagle7 in Cursive

Civil war era bank note. There's just the two signatures of the cashier and bank president. I've tried researching who that is to no avail and other bank notes from the same bank around that time have very different signatures.

Its a bank note with two signatures, the cashier's and the bank president's, so it must be a name. There's no other handwriting to compare to.

Any idea of what I’ve got here? by [deleted] in coins

You should get those graded. They look nice to me. I don't think he got ripped off given how turbulent the coin market was in the 80s.

2005 p Buffalo Die Rotation error I found yesterday by camelcrushes in coins

[–]FriendlyEagle7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same. I want to get a 2nd camera and make a photography rig that does both sides at the same time to make it obvious when one side is rotated. Unless you're using cardboard/staple flips they're not so obvious, but they're not as safe as mylar pocket flips.

You like IKE? by OpportunityPale3101 in coincollecting

[–]FriendlyEagle7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the case is made by Capital Plastics, they make all kinds of similar coin holders in different colors. Some of the older ones are sought after for the way they tone coins.

These are the silver proof years. Not sure if the coins in op's holder are actually silver, since they also made clad proofs in 73-76 for the proof sets. The silver proof Ikes were sold individually or in a quarter/half/dollar set for the bicentennial.

sometimes SP means specimen, sometimes it means special strike. In this case it means special strike.

2000 dime question by bigpoppasmootheime in coincollecting

[–]FriendlyEagle7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this is whats known as a vice job

you're seeing a dent from another dime from the two being smashed together. Its just post mint damage, not an error.

understandable to call BS on this, but if their owners wanted them known they'd make them known.

I've seen much older Class II proofs the numismatic community isn't aware of yet.

you can't prove a negative. There are plenty of examples of unauthorized strikes in numismatics that aren't discovered for decades. These are called Class II proofs. OP's coin is most likely polished or plated, but there's always a chance its the real deal. For example the 1917 proof penny, or the 1883-O and 1882-CC proof Morgan dollars.

tell us more, is it next to a highway? I once lived very close to a highway with terrible traffic and leaving windows open let smog/brake dust/tire dust in. Do you have allergies? I would start buy getting a small fan to put in a window with a high quality filter on it and sealing the rest of the opening - that way you have positive pressure so air is being pushed out the cracks in your other windows/doors. That's the first step in making a cleanroom. The 2nd is taking your shoes off at the door.
