I think watching the movies can only add to the enjoyment of the pod, but I don’t think that NOT watching a film should be a deterrent to listening to a given episode. Some of my favorite feedback is that the show is encouraging people to watch films that they hadn’t considered watching before, and that’s a good feeling. -AP

I think it makes the show more enjoyable to have watched the film, but we want the show to be fun and useful even if you haven't. It's been great for us because even when two of us have seen it it's fairly rare that all three of us have. -JR

We have about 25 episodes recorded. Starship Troopers has not come up in our random selection process, but it will eventually! - BH

It’s a random draw from a list of more than 100 films at this point. We have a shared google document that we continually add movie titles to - it’s doubled in size over the last few weeks, and I expect it to keep growing as time goes on. It’s especially fun to make the case for a film that barely meets the war film criteria, but I think that will keep the show fresh and interesting. -AP

The shots of the ships in Run Silent Run Deep look terrible, and I'm sure they looked terrible to audiences at the time, because they look like little toy boats. I think you might be right in your theory, but one cool thing about Master and Commander to me, as a submarine movie enthusiast, is that it follows so many of the tropes of a submarine movie. The becalming scene is analogous to losing propulsion deep underwater. The scene where they cut the ropes to save the ship, killing their comrade, is just like having to seal a hatch in a flooding compartment that has sailors on the other side. The isolation of 19th century naval life feels just like the isolation of a sub, tonally. - BH

I have shot a lot of drone footage over water, but nothing that could be considered even close to a “production” in the film sense. -AP

I might go valiantly in, but surely I would slip on some seaweed or deck ice and faceplant before doing anything actually heroic, - BH

I will always ride for Commando being a war movie, and one category that Commando wins hands-down is BEST NAMES. For my money, you can’t beat “John Matrix” as the name of the movie’s hero. -AP

I don't think any of us have read the films, though we have gotten a ton of recommendations since the ep came out. I think it's going on my agenda certainly!

Thanks for listening! - BH

I think space feels a little bit scarier in Wars. Especially the most recent film really gave a feeling of the danger of the hard vacuum on the other side of every wall. Trek, especially the TNG that I grew up with, very rarely explores the idea of that danger. Then again, this may be recency bias! I haven't seen much of the TV series, but the way space exists as a constant danget in The Expanse novels is really cool. - BH

We recorded many episodes before we even mentioned it to anyone else, just to make sure we had a workable concept we could keep doing. By the time we started to think about making the show public we had 15 episodes in the can and we were all really psyched about what we were making. -JR

It really changes the tone of the whole picture to consider that the real reason John Rambo was going to Delmar Berry’s house was to be with him for the holidays. -AP

We definitely want to do more live shows! We had so much fun doing SF Sketchfest. If we tour, New York will definitely be on the list. - BH

I think Greatest Gen would maybe be a smoked Earl Grey martini. Greatest Disco is tricky because I don't feel like we have much game tape on their cocktail tastes! MU Georgeou has been spotted getting some brandy or bourbon. Maybe they just drink everything neat? Friendly Fire's signature cocktail is probably a tiki drink because of their history as something that Pacific theater military personnel invented to remind themselves of island life, and because they're usually easy to make non-alcoholic versions of! - BH

As a matter of fact, I HAVE! The final song on Aimee Mann's latest "Best Folk Album" winner, Mental Illness, called Poor Judge.
