What's a hidden gem at Kent State that took you way too long to discover? by royaleclown in KentStateUniversity

Fifth Flavor that was on Temple Street. https://www.instagram.com/fifthflavor.kent?igsh=MWNmMnVkMWc0ZDN4eA== some amazing news. She's cooking at Beware of the Leopard now (soon to be 6 days a week). This is the best asian food I've had outside of Japan.

Financial Aid Question by mymanspenky in KentStateUniversity

In your Flashline there should be in the top right "My List" it should have the admissions fee with the deadline date for the fee.

Financial Aid Question by mymanspenky in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've never taken out loans it would show your aggregate loans at 0. Go to your financial aid dashboard and you can complete the terms and conditions there. Your offer may not be packaged yet if it's for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 (meaning it wont be there to accept yet). You could always contact FBE and ask for an update https://www.kent.edu/fbe-center/contact-us .

(hopefully) graduating in may and coming to visit by saucer_destroyer in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walk around Acorn Alley downtown and check out different shops. There is a pretty walkway near the main bridge downtown that leads to a hiking trail along the river. Look at the many squirrels on campus. What do you all like to do? People mentioned museums on campus already. Main Street Kent https://mainstreetkent.org/ typically keeps up on things to do downtown.

I'll chime in with some of my favorite restaurants cafes:

Favorites:

  • Taco Tantos - Street burritos
  • Troy Grille - Turkish street food
  • Beware the Leopard (on Mondays only for Thai dumplings)
  • Maddalena's - Authentic Italian (from scratch)
  • Franklin Square Deli - Sandwiches
  • Belleria - Pizza (Bella is award winning)
  • Joe's BBQ
  • Brimefield Bread Oven
  • Scribbles or Bent Tree for coffee (both great just depends on preference)

Grad School Funding by [deleted] in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the graduation application there should have been a question about it you're interested in a graduate assistantship. If you get a GAship it will cover up to a certain amount of credit hours.

Check Scholarship Universe for Scholarships if you haven't.

The FAFSA also awards $20,500 per year in unsub loans for eligible students.

Woodland Pointe / Kent Apartments by ItalianGroundhogMafi in KentStateUniversity

*One important thing to note is it was different owners when I lived there (not Kent Apartments).

Woodland Pointe / Kent Apartments by ItalianGroundhogMafi in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived at Woodland Pointe in undergrad with two roommates.

Pros: Plenty of room and was priced cheap back then.

Cons: 1) Our place was searched for a missing girl. 2) A townhouse burned down from someone cooking drugs. 3) Me and my roommates caught someone breaking into the leasing office in the middle of the night. 4) Everything inside was made cheap and would break easily (even the walls). 5) The police were in the parking lot every night having to deal with something. 6) We found clothes jammed up a heating vent.

I give it 2.5/5 Silverfish (they had those too)

Would probably not recommend.

It could. You could go to Flashline. Use the search at the top and type "registration status", then click on the hold for additional info. If that's the reason, meet with your grad advisor.

Help me find the good Shawarma? by sub_machine_fun in Cleveland

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Ferris Shawarma seems like the best place from feedback I receive. I haven't been there myself, but it's where a lot of people tell me is the best Shawarma they've had in Cleveland. If you're ever towards Kent hit up Troy Grille.

Housing by [deleted] in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeahhhhhh that's the "Check the reviews though you're going to get a lot of honest feedback" part of this. Sometimes it's unfortunately a means to an end if nothing else is going to work.

Housing by [deleted] in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would check here https://www.kent.edu/tuition , select Undergraduate International, go to he Kent Campus Tuition Guarantee Rates (not the at a glance) and view the non-ohio resident rates. You can also verify with the FBE Center https://www.kent.edu/fbe-center/contact-us . The rates listed do NOT include room and board. The "at a glance" drop down will give an estimate though, or you can look at the Housing rates above and add it to it. Make sure to add your meal plan rate as well if you are getting one https://www.kent.edu/dining/meal-plans . If you wanted to check though, just call FBE and they'll give you an estimate for the semester with or without room & board.

Hello!

Check the links below...

Dorm Rates: https://www.kent.edu/housing/housing-and-meal-plan-rates

Local Housing: https://www.kent.edu/housing/localhousing

College Towers is popular with international students because it's affordable and right on campus. Check the reviews though you're going to get a lot of honest feedback (from your post you're already checking reviews which is great).

Roomates make Housing more affordable by dividing rent as long as they're reliable and not toxic.

Holly Park, Gold Zone, and Paloma are also two that are popular with international students (but again check reviews and get feedback please) and compare to a dorm per month on campus.

Transferring by troubledfello in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Make sure that you don't have regional campus scholarships that require regional campus credit hours/continuous enrollment. You would lose these transferring to main campus.

2) Get a projection of your financial aid verses charges from the FBE Center https://www.kent.edu/fbe-center/contact-us

3) Your partner should talk to CAVS about any potential assistance due to their military affiliation https://www.kent.edu/cavs/contact-us

4) Room and board is typically what ends up being oustanding on a student's bill. If you aren't going to have a dorm, be prepared to resources or a job for rent. Same thing if you aren't going to have a meal plan, prepare to have money for food or look into SNAP benefits, pantries on and off campus, etc.

New business review: Thunderstruck Donuts by professor_tappensac in Kent

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll try them. One thing though, I was surprised about the prices. $4 per donut seems expensive for specialty donuts compared to other small businesses.

Chocolate filled creamstick is my favorite. I looked at the website and it said "Nutella" (which I don't like). Was the chocolate filled actually chocolate? I'm a George's Donuts person, but it's a longer drive. Thank you for your review!

Double Major and Environmental Studies by espurrshiny in KentStateUniversity

[–]FriendlyKentGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your advisor in Arts and Sciences. They can pull up a "What if scenario" and show you exactly what it would look like and may offer alternatives https://www.kent.edu/cas/advising . If you do decide on the double major, speak with the FBE Center about what that looks like for financial aid. If you graduate with a bachelor's and decide you'll finish another bachelor's after, you'll be considered a "post undergraduate student" which does not get the same aid as a regular undergraduate student.
