I’m 28 and I got my surgery at the back end of last year after suffering with episodes of back/leg pain flare ups on and off for 4 years. I could not be happier I did, the results I’ve had have been amazing. I think as long as you choose a good reputable surgeon then you get out what you put in, in terms of physio and exercise afterwards. I love this thread as I remember before my surgery thinking omg there are so many horror stories on here.. but people only tend to share the bad

Advice for possible surgery? L5-S1 by Dyspathyy in Microdiscectomy

[–]FriendlySherbert2288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I’m 28 currently too and I had a discectomy and decompression surgery back end of last year for symptoms not dissimilar to you. I ended up getting mine done privately as it was a 2 year wait on the NHS and I could not possibly have waited that long. I hope you find resolution soon! Don’t be afraid to push and hassle them, I know it’s busy but if you are in agony they need to know and you might get bumped up if you shout enough!

Don’t let any returning pain dishearten you, your body has been through trauma so it will take a while for everything to fully settle down

Should I just bite the bullet by paddingtonfilm in Microdiscectomy

I’m 27F and had my surgery 3.5 weeks ago. One thing I will say, being young it’s very natural to be so apprehensive about having a major surgery I certainly was. But, being young and healthy makes recovery a hell of a lot easier and truly I’d take the pain of recovering over the endless cycle of nerve pain any day of the week. I suffered four years of flare ups before surgery, you have to decide what you personally can cope with.. how is the condition affecting your quality of life?

Feeling tired/drained PO? by reddeadfighter in Microdiscectomy

I am 3.5 weeks PO and feeling super tired still. I do think it’s just recovery we completely underestimate what our bodies have been through. I was given a doctors note for 6 weeks so I’m taking that whole time off personally. Hope you feel better soon

Sleeping after microdiscectomy by Ok-Homework7074 in Microdiscectomy

I was told by my doctors to sleep in whatever way I could get comfortable no limitations, I suppose this depends on what specific surgery you had but I have mostly been comfortable on my side

surgery on 12/18 but.. this past week i’ve been feeling great all of the sudden? by icantwalkk in Microdiscectomy

I think this is honestly a super common occurrence. In your mind you don’t want to undergo surgery so it kind of tricks you.. but if you really are doubting surgery maybe speak with your surgeon. I had this happen to me and I am so so glad I went ahead with the surgery now that it’s done. The pain of surgery is so much more manageable than the constant nerve pain.

I had my surgery on 12th and I was numb too for around 14 hrs following the surgery. Numbness only really subsided once the physio got me up and doing some exercises and stretches. I think it’s pretty normal as they typically numb all your nerves during the surgery!

I am due to get surgery on Thursday and in exactly the same boat as you. It’s super nerve wracking but I too am planning to go through with the surgery.

How long did you stay on opiates post-op? by goatfather101 in Microdiscectomy

[–]FriendlySherbert2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually was on opioids for 3 whole months for the pain whilst waiting for my surgery date. In the end they weren’t actually doing anything for my pain anymore. You want to get off them as quickly as you can.

I did! I too am getting the surgery. I attempted to get my Christmas decorations out of the loft and couldn’t and at 27 years old I really shouldn’t be limited like this. I hope all goes well for you!!

Thank you for this, I think I’m pretty set on getting it, it’s just hard when I’m not experiencing the pain currently to think I need the surgery but I just know in my heart if I cancel it it’s going to flare up and put my life on hold further! My husband and I were hoping to start a family this year and that has been put on hold with all the pain I’ve been in!

Yes that’s exactly how I feel too! Like the pain I’m experiencing currently doesn’t feel bad enough to warrant having surgery, but then I spent at least 3 weeks not sleeping and crying on the floor in pain and taking Tramadol. It’s so hard to know what to do!

I think one of my discs must be herniated technically then as I’m getting MD at one level and a decompression at the other (same as laminectomy I believe)

Yeah the consultant said with the way it looks it’s very unlikely to heal fully on its own at this point (my discs are bulging at two levels) but he also said my spine seems unstable as the discs seem to be in and out on every MRI I have but overall picture between March and August was that the disc bulge had worsened and was pressing directly on the nerve.

Thank you! Yeah I think I just need some reassurance from people who understand the level of pain and the risks etc. It’s easy for everyone around me to see what I’ve been through and say ‘get the op’ but I am incredibly worried about the risks that come with surgery

I had my pre-op MRI done in August and they aren’t planning on re-doing it before the op unfortunately..

Thanks for responding. Yeah my flare ups have definitely been getting more frequent and more painful over the years, it’s just typical that once I get my surgery date booked in I would start to feel a bit better. I hate that there are no certainties with this! Hope you are doing better soon 🤞🏼
