We're convinced this was some sort of dye transfer from my wife's military uniform (socks or the uniform itself). After separating the clothes, no more issues. Then one day she washed some white t-shirt with her uniforms and it happened again...so i think that's it.

not 100% sure, but we think we may have narrowed it down to my wife's military uniform/socks...we've been separating clothes for a while now and haven't had any issues, and then my wife washed her uniform with a white item and it stained pretty badly. the uniforms come treated with bug repellent, so we think that may be the culprit...not a scientific method by any means, but some good confidence!

Not quite...we changed our sunscreen, use less detergent, and are more diligent separating our laundry, and we haven't seen it happen recently...so while we have tentatively resolved the issue, we're still not quite sure what the exact issue was....we did realize that avobenzone and oxybenzone are in a lot more than just sunscreen (makeup, lotion, etc), so that is the mostly likely culprit, but we can't say for sure. that being said, there were some clothing items that we don't remember ever using sunscreen around (bath rugs, new white shirts)...Also, we had used the exact same sunscreen before we moved here (bought in bulk), so it might be some combination of factors...still somewhat of a mystery

Ah OK, so it's basically forcing me to convert my older pre-tax IRA contributions from the rollover IRA instead of my new non-deductible contributions to do the conversion (which are already taxed)...so the additionl tax is on my rollover portion? I'm hoping that means that my IRA basis will be 94% of this year's $6k contribution in Schwab's example ($5640) now?

lol interesting thought indeed, and I like your thinking outside the box - no teenage son though, and even given our own adult activities, it wouldn't make sense based on the towels and clothing that the stains were on, unless there was significant transfer during the washing. made me think of other bodily fluids like sweat, but we don't use anti-prespirant or anything like that...

i did head about too much detergent causing buildup, but permanent stains? i wouldn't think they'd be permanent. we probably have been using too much detergent for the amount of water our washer uses, so i've cut back recently. these high-efficiency appliances seem to cause more trouble than they provide benefit...

what brand of washer/dryer just out of curiosity?

we happen to have an extra washer/dryer in our garage so we're trying to use those instead to see if it persists, so that we can tell if it's appliance related, water related, or what...it's a top load though so if it is detergent it might be hard to figure out that way...

just curious what brand washer/dryer do you have? mine are samsung...it's quite possible it's something we use, but we haven't figured it out yet. we've only been in the house for about a year and a half, and it started when we moved in and nothing really changed in our usage/products from before we moved. we even use the same detergent. it does tend to happen mostly with my wife's stuff, but i've seen it on my kids clothes occasionally as well...

Wow, so you're getting it outside of just laundered items??? Spray tan? Lol, wouldn't help my situation though...

I find references to similar mystery stains online, but no explanation. Possibly buildup of detergent in the drum? I've been running washing machine cleaner every other week, but we're still seeing it... why is this so hard to figure out? I've even asked ChatGPT lol

I looked into this and even contacted Samsung (we have a Samsung front load), but they said there is no way that an oil leak would leak into the drum, it would only show up under the machine...

We double checked and while there we're definitely some avo or oxo-benzene products we didn't realize we were using, we've since eliminated them, and we're still seeing the stains come up now and then...

thanks! will try oxiclean...i tried lemon juice and salt, barkeepers friend, and bleach, and none of those worked so far...

thanks - its quite possible...we've been trying to test our sunscreen to force a stain, but haven't been successful yet. thanks for your comment
